When Bob Hisaoka held the first Gala to honor his sister Joan, he selected Smith Center as the sole recipient. Now, nine years later, we are fortunate to remain a beneficiary thanks to the quality of the programs we offer and the remarkable people who come through our doors. The Gala supports Smith Center and Life with Cancer.
Here is what support from the Gala makes possible at Smith Center:
- Our cancer support programs and attendance have doubled. We have expanded programming to include four weekly yoga classes, support groups, and will shortly offer Spanish language programming with Nueva Vida.
- Our newly formed Institute of Oncology Navigation trained 40 navigators in 2014 and we now offer onsite patient navigation services here at Smith Center.
- Through a three-year Komen for the Cure grant we are working with African American breast cancer survivors in DC’s wards 7 and 8 and their clinicians to improve communication and trust.
We have once again been selected to be a recipient of the 9th annual Joan Hisaoka Make A Difference Gala in support of people with cancer in our community. It will be held on Saturday, September 17th, 2016 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
