Sacred Reminders of "What Matters" to You

Personal Scrolls Creativity Workshop

It is always the simple that produces the marvelous.

-Amelia Barr

Scrolls, the earliest form of books, were used to transmit knowledge and stories through many cultures. In some cultures, scrolls are considered sacred and are held in high esteem. In this workshop, participants will make a simple, yet complex, personal scroll. Through writing exercises, as if by ‘magic’, you will discover the ‘subject’ of your scroll. We will use a variety of materials to create personal scrolls and scroll holders – unique and meaningful works of art that you can hang on the wall or keep in your purse or pocket for inspiration and comfort.

A range of papers and art materials will be provided. Students are asked to bring black & white or color copies of photographs. This creativity workshop is designed for all ranges of artistic experience and novices are especially welcome!

For counselors, art therapists, expressive therapists, social workers, marriage and family therapists who wish to receive CECs, the workshop objectives are:

  •  1) Attendees will be able to understand the scroll as an archetype of healing throughout history.
  •  2) Attendees will be able to list three ways scrolls help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as aid in grief recovery.
  •  3) Attendees will be able to list three strategies for incorporating art therapy techniques such as scrolls into their personal and professional practice.

Our programs are tailored to the needs of people affected by cancer, but we welcome anyone who would like to attend.

Note: We are pleased to offer a discount for those who register early!
The cost for this program is:

  • $20 if you register by February 24
  • $25 if you register after February 24

Scholarships & Giving Back

For those in need — Free programs and Scholarship Assistance
We aim to offer free and low-cost programs, affordable to anyone who would like to participate. If you would like to attend a program, but find the cost to be a barrier, fill out a scholarship request form or email programs@smithcenter.org. Full or partial scholarship assistance is available for most programs.

For those who can give — Donations
As a nonprofit, we rely on your support to keep our programs going. Registration fees cover less than half of what it costs to provide our programs. If you're able to give a little extra (or a lot), it will help ensure that all who are in need of Smith Center's resources will receive them.

It’s easy to add a secure donation during your registration process at the top of the "Checkout" page.  We thank you for your support!
