Cooking for People With Cancer

When you’re living with cancer, what you eat matters. This fun and informative class is a great place to start learning about the role of nutrition in cancer care. Participants will learn the basic principles of healthy and delicious food selection and preparation.

The class will begin with tasty appetizers followed by a lecture on the basic principles of selecting healthy food and a demonstration on how to build flavor in a dish. The class will conclude with participants seeing and tasting a “balanced plate” of colorful, beautiful, nourishing, and delicious foods.

  • The known relationships between food and cancer
  • How to create your own balanced plate at home
  • How to choose foods at the grocery store and farmers' market
  • How to build flavor to turn a healthy dish into a delicious dish
  • Laura's secrets as you leave with recipes to make at home
  • Tips to make preparing and eating your meals more enjoyable

Come learn how to make and sample some of Laura’s most delicious seasonal recipes.

Laura Pole, RN, MSN,
 has served as Smith Center’s head chef and nurse consultant since 1997. She is an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist and Cancer Guide with 25 years experience in caring for people with serious illness. She is also a Certified Health Supportive Chef, professional musician and Nia body-mind fitness instructor. Laura is the founder of “Eating for a Lifetime,” a consulting business dedicated to teaching individuals and professionals about health supportive eating and food preparation
