Join us on Thursday, July 25th from 6:30-8:30pm for the From the Outside Artist's Talk! Hear what some of the artists featured in this exciting exhibition have to say about their work, their process, and how they found the raw art within themselves!

About the Exhibition:

Following the success of last year’s Messages From Outsiderdom visionary exhibition, this year’s From the Outside brings a new selection of visionary, raw, outsider, primitive, naïve, and brut artists to the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery. Unlike other art genres, visionary and outsider art can neither be defined simply as one movement set in time nor spelled out in academic terms, rather it is truly only understood when experienced and witnessed first-hand. Artist and visionary art proponent Jean Dubuffet first coined the term “Art Brut,” – or ‘Raw Art’ – raw in that it is ‘uncooked’ by culture. It exists in a realm all its own. Baltimore’s American Visionary Art Museum Art defines visionary art as “Art produced by self-taught individuals, usually without formal training, whose works arise from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself.”1 However, we occasionally also place select trained artists under the visionary category.

In his A Manifesto of Visionary Art, author and visionary artist Laurence Caruana writes “Art of the visionary attempts to show what lies beyond the boundary of our sight.”2 We invite you to look beyond the boundary of your sight and experience this fantastically unique art form for yourself. From the Outside features the work of Areli & Manuel, Candy Cummings, Jim Doran, Bradford Elliott, Tina Lassiter, Glenn Richardson, Matt Sesow, Maria Simonsson & Kathy Beynette, and Dolly Vehlow.
