The Ayurvedic Kitchen: Balance and Bliss

Ayurveda is the traditional Indian “Science of Life.” It offers a means to find balance and healing by discovering our basic constitution, or dosha, and examining our current physical, mental and spiritual condition with tools to support our true measure of vibrant health. The wisdom tradition of Ayurveda prescribes self-care as our most valuable healing tool, with attention to our diet and cooking practices at the top of the list. Ayurvedic cooking emphasizes fresh, whole, local, seasonal foods, prepared in the most conscious and loving way, to nourish us, to keep our digestive fire (agni) strong, and our innate constitution balanced.

This class, The Ayurvedic Kitchen: Balance and Bliss will offer:

  • How to determine your individual dosha;
  • How to choose and prepare the foods for your dosha that nurture you best;
  • Seasonings that can bring us digestive strength and balance;
  • The Six Tastes of Ayurveda, and how they affect us;
  • Seasonal foods and cooking practices for optimal vibrant health!

This class is intended to be as hands-on as possible, so if you have a favorite kitchen knife and apron, please bring them! Class will finish with a lovely Ayurvedic seasonal meal and a discussion. Recipes will be provided.

Our programs are open to the community, and tailored to meet the needs of people affected by cancer. Classes and workshops are free or low cost on a pay-as-you-can basis, ensuring that our programs are accessible to everyone.

Cathryn Gunnerson, AYS, teaches yoga and Ayurveda in the Washington, DC metro area, and is a long-time professional chef. She is an Ayurveda Yoga Specialist through the Himalayan Institute, teaching the self-care basics of the traditional Indian science of Ayurveda and Ayurvedic cooking to groups and private clients. Since 1997, she has taught both traditional and gentle hatha yoga classes for adults and children; therapeutic classes for seniors and special-needs students; and restorative yoga. It is her deepest desire to offer tools that bring balance and well-being into the lives of those she touches.
