- Tuesday, January 27, 6pm
Young Adults with cancer, regardless of stage of diagnosis or current phase of treatment, are invited to participate in a focus group and dinner.
Smith Center and Hospice Caring, Inc. are seeking volunteers to provide valuable input for a potential new initiative to strengthen peer support networks for adolescents and young adults diagnosed with a terminal illness, from diagnosis to survivorship through end-of-life.
Why we hope you'll join us in exploring this issue:
- Research highlights the positive role peers can have in supporting the social and emotional needs of those facing a life threatening illnesses.
- There are few – if any – programs in the DC region that tailor peer support services to the 15-39 age group.
- The first step in addressing this gap is to increase our understanding of the loss and grief process from the survivor (your) perspective; including anticipatory grief.
- The expected outcome is to train/support friends and other young adult volunteers to “be there” when and how they are needed at diagnosis, during treatment, into survivorship or to end of life.
