Hosted by Critical Mass

Thursday, September 7th from 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Adolescent and young adult cancer survivors are not only at increased risk for a recurrence of their original cancer, but also at higher risk for developing new diseases due to previous treatments and screenings. Young adults with cancer must frequently make care and treatment decisions, along with their providers, using research, data and therapies solely based on experiences and research of pediatric or older adult cancer patients. We will be discussing the challenges and benefits experienced by adolescents and young adults when navigating cancer research and clinical trial options for care.

About Critical Mass

Critical Mass was formed in 2006 as the LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance (Alliance), a program of the LIVESTRONG Foundation, built as a volunteer-driven coalition of organizations that included universities and academic medical centers, cancer centers, community hospitals, professional societies, nonprofit/advocacy groups, and liaison members from government agencies such as NCI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The LIVESTRONG Foundation created the Alliance originally as an implementation body to address the recommendations in the groundbreaking report from the NCI’s Adolescent/Young Adult Oncology Progress Review Group in 2006, which was the first major recognition in the United States of young adults between 15-39 years old as a distinct group with unique needs, issues and even biology.

Our programs are based on suggested donation, and are open to the community, and tailored to meet the needs of people affected by cancer. Classes and workshops are free or low cost on a pay-as-you-can basis, ensuring that our programs are accessible to everyone.

Join us at our meeting of the DC Young Adult Cancer Community on Sunday, June 11 from 5:00-6:30pm.

Being diagnosed with cancer is difficult, and sometimes it is hard for family and friends to understand exactly what you’re going through. We hope this support group will help you feel less isolated and allow you to make connections with others facing a similar challenge. This group is designed so that you can share common concerns, fears and coping strategies with other people who have been in similar shoes. Participants will explore their experience with cancer and other matters of importance in their lives in a group setting, with a trained social worker, and work towards improving their lives.
