SUMMARY:En Persona: Nueva Vida Grupo de Apoyo (en Español)
\n\n\n\nEste programa se ofrece en persona en Smith Center for Healing and the Arts. Para registrarse\, llame a Claudia a Nueva Vida: 202.223.9100.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNueva Vida is an independent nonprofit that provides free\, comprehensive\, culturally competent cancer services to medically underserved Latino families in the District of Columbia\, Northern Virginia (as far south as Prince William County)\, Suburban Maryland (Montgomery & Prince George’s Counties)\, Richmond\, and Baltimore. Other services include outreach to the Latino community and Patient Navigation for cancer screenings and treatment. \n\n\n\nIn partnership with Smith Center\, Nueva Vida will be providing support groups that are focused on supporting the trauma associated with a cancer diagnosis. These groups provide Latina women the opportunity to experience a catharsis of feelings\, where they feel safe to identify\, verbalize\, empathize\, and share their feelings with others who are in similar circumstances. All support group meetings are paired with a stress reduction activity (either Zumba or Yoga). \n\n\n\nThis program is being offered in-person at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts. Please call Claudia at 202.384.8342 to register. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \, \n Nueva Vida\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Venue\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:Parents with Cancer - A Place for Healing
DESCRIPTION:Parents with Cancer – A Place for Healing is a peer-led virtual support group for parents who are newly diagnosed\, in active treatment or in survivorship experiencing challenges with their role as a parent during their cancer journey. As this is a peer led support group\, the co-facilitators can best support parents who have children from 0-18 years old. \n\n\n\nThis group is not about giving advice (although facilitators will share resources after group and encourage this type of sharing outside of group). Instead it is about sharing our stories (the heart ache that comes from parenting with cancer) without judgment and listening with love. There will also be periodic in-person playdates for parents\, partners and their kids in the DMV. \n\n\n\nWhat Members Are Saying:\n\n\n\n“Crucial resource for parents — an invaluable source of connection.” \n\n\n\n“I’m reaching out today to share with you how helpful yesterday’s program was for me. It was the first time I had joined a support group specifically for parents. That topic alone was worth attending and what really impressed me was the format. I found so much value in the way that we held space for each other\, listened\, and used silence as part of the process. I look forward to attending again. I am so grateful to the Smith Center for providing this resource.” \n\n\n\n“I have been attending this healing circle as much as I can and it has brought me so much comfort and peace– and truly a sense of belonging and healing.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Healing Circle Host \, \n Lauren Sauer\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Healing Circle Host \, \n Tracy Steffek\, MPA\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:Healing Circle: Grupo de Apoyo LGBTQIA+ con Cáncer de Próstata Para Hispanoparlantes (en Español)
(13:30-15:00 ET). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProstate cancer (PC) is a reality that also affects the LGBTQIA+ community. It is the most frequent tumor in people with a prostate\, the second most common worldwide and the fifth in mortality. There is no evidence to relate PC to sexual orientation. Most diagnoses occur in people over 65\, being very rare in those under 40. The LGBTQIA+ group faces a triple taboo in relation to prostate cancer. On the one hand\, it is a cancer that is not often spoken of in our society because it affects the traditional concept of masculinity. On the other hand\, this silence is aggravated by our sexuality. This situation can affect the treatments we receive\, due to the lack of information on the side effects of treatments in relation to our sexual orientation and our sexual practices. And\, finally\, there is another important condition: age. The generation that is currently being diagnosed has been marginalized and discriminated against\, so they are often afraid to ask questions related to intimacy. \n\n\n\nWhat we propose is to create a space to talk about our experiences\, the treatments we receive\, our emotions\, how we feel\, how PC affects our relationships\, and the tools we have to face our difficulties. It is very difficult to find a support group for Spanish speakers in the the LGBTQIA+ community. In this group you will find support. \n\n\n\nThe Healing Circle for Spanish-Speaking LGBTQIA+ Men with Prostate Cancer meets Monthly on the 1st Monday of each month from 7:30 – 9:00PM Madrid Time Zone/1:30 – 3:00 PM EST. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Healing Circle Host \, \n Alfonso Luis\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Healing Circle Host \, \n Charles Domingue\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:Survivorship Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This group is designed for cancer survivors who have completed their primary cancer treatment(s) and are now either post-treatment or on maintenance medication (such as hormonal therapy). Cancer can be emotionally and physically draining — many times we aren’t able to fully process the experience until after treatment is over and we are trying to get back to our “normal” lives. The struggle and expectation to find “normal” again can also be an overwhelming process. This group is a space where you can talk openly about these issues and process the trauma of cancer with other survivors. \n\n\n\nThe group meets monthly on the 2nd Tuesday from 6:30-7:30pm ET. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Support Group Facilitator \, \n Crystal Joseph\, LCPC\, LPC\, ACS\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Support Group Facilitator \, \n Lashondra Love\, LGSW\, LMSW\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:Grieving Together: A 6-Week Series
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in a series Healing Circles for Grief “to discover the extent and limits of what is lost\, what is left and what is possible.”  – John Schneider \n\n\n\nIf you have lost a loved one\, this is an opportunity to share what is on your heart and mind right now\, to listen and be listened to deeply and generously. Together we create a safe space for listening to messages from our inner experience.  \n\n\n\nOur healing circles are a safe and supportive space to walk with each other through these times. Each circle is a blend of sharing and silence\, compassion\, and curiosity. Our agreements ensure acceptance and confidentiality. We honor our own unique paths to healing and respect the choices of others. \n\n\n\nTo register for this program through Healing Circles Global\, please click <here> \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSome Assumptions about Grief\n\n\n\n\nThe experience of grief is unique for each individual. While we can make some general assumptions\, there is no template that describes the experience for all people.\n\n\n\nGrief is cumulative. That is\, each time loss is grieved\, the grief encompasses the lifetime of loss and the remnants of each experience.\n\n\n\nGrief following a significant loss is most often a lifelong process\, with each pivotal point in life bringing the grief back up to be processed from a new perspective.\n\n\n\nGrief\, loss and suffering fundamentally changes and reshapes the individual.\n\n\n\nGrief is not about forgetting or disconnecting. Rather\, healthy grief is about remembering the parts of self that get lost amidst the experience and reorienting the individual in their relationship with self\, the world and others.\n\n\n\nGrief is a whole body experience: emotional\, physical\, spiritual and intellectual. Each have a wide range of expression which can cue us that grief is present.\n\n\n\nWhile grief and trauma are often intertwined there are significant differences between them. Trauma should be addressed with trauma specific interventions that often go beyond what is possible in circles.\n\n\n\n\nAdapted from Khris Ford \n\n\n\nGrieving Together Healing Circle will meet Weekly on Tuesdays from 1:00-2:30pm ET from March 11 – April 15 \n\n\n\nGrief Circle Dates: \n\n\n\n\nMarch 11\, 18 & 25\n\n\n\nApril 1\, 8 &15\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Team facilitators data is not available. \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:Healing Circle for Metastatic Breast Cancer Thrivers 45+
DESCRIPTION:This healing circle is for people who are 45 and older who are living and thriving with Metastatic Breast Cancer. This peer-led circle will provide a safe place to connect\, support and share with one another. \n\n\n\nThis Healing Circle will meet Monthly on the 2nd Wednesday from 5:15-6:45pm ET. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is a Healing Circle? \n\n\n\nHealing Circles bring together small numbers of people impacted by a condition or circumstance to share experiences and harvest collective wisdom.  Healing Circles is a peer-led process by which people support each other through deep listening and shared learning. When working at its best\, this collaborative conversation model leads to authentic and deep connectivity and can create wisdom and healing for participants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Healing Circle Host \, \n Lisa Hahn\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

Other services include outreach to the Latino community and Patient Navigation for cancer screenings and treatment. \n\n\n\nIn partnership with Smith Center\, Nueva Vida provides support groups that are focused on supporting the trauma associated with a cancer diagnosis. These groups provide Latina women the opportunity to experience a catharsis of feelings\, where they feel safe to identify\, verbalize\, empathize\, and share their feelings with others who are in similar circumstances. All support group meetings are paired with a stress reduction activity (either Zumba or Yoga). \n\n\n\nThis program is being offered virtually through Zoom. Please register to Claudia at 202.384.8342 to receive the Zoom link to participate. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \, \n Nueva Vida\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer
