SUMMARY:Previvor Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith M’Bahlia Colson and Rachel Ress\, LICSW\nIn Partnership with Cancer Support Community\n\n\n\n\nThis group is for previvors who have an elevated predisposition for a cancer diagnosis or those who have tested positive to cancer genetic markers\, such as the BRCA gene. \n\n \n\nHaving a predisposition to cancer can be an overwhelming experience and one that is often isolating. As a previvor\, one often goes through emotional\, physical\, and mental hardships. \n\n \n\nThis group offers a safe space for community where you can talk openly with others who also identify as previvors. \n\n\n\nThe Previvor Support Group will meet Monthly on the 2nd Thursday (beginning in March) from 6:30 – 7:30pm ET. \nUpcoming Dates: \n\n March 9\n April 13\n May 11\n\n\n\n\nAbout M’Bahlia Colson\nM’bahlia is a mother\, educator and a previvor.  Her mom died from breast cancer and dad from prostate cancer. After two breast lumptectomies she was diagnosed with a high expentancy of developing breast cancer.  She underwent a prophylatic bilateral mastectomy during the height of the Covid 19 pandemic in NYC. To her disbelief\, the hospital did not offer any support for women to help navigate this “new” life. Upon returning home to Washington\, DC for reconstruction again no community for support\, safe space and sharing.  \nAs an educator and administrator for more than 15 years\, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and Master’s Degree in Education. M’bahlia applies her research and education background to provide resources to her new community to help them make informed decisions and accesss to support groups.  \n\nAbout Rachel Ress\, LICSW\n\n\nRachel is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker serving as Cancer Support Community Washington DC’s (CSC DC) Community Navigator. Prior to working at CSC DC\, Rachel was an oncology social worker with the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital for three years. She earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice where she interned at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Rachel uses an eclectic approach in providing support and compassion to cancer patients and their families\, and she is passionate about the intersection of chronic illness and mental health.

SUMMARY:Radical Writing Space
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Kiersten Gallagher\n\nWherever you are on life’s journey\, there are times when it can feel impossible to commit to a recurring program like a workshop series. Radical Writing Space is our answer to this conundrum of wanting to attend for some radical self-care\, but struggling to commit.\n \nClinical studies have documented the healing psychological and psychical impacts of writing within a safe and sacred space. On the second Friday of each month\, drop in for one hour for Radical Writing Space and join us for inspiring writing prompts\, time to write\, and time to share with one another about your experience of putting your most radical emotions\, feelings\, and experiences on paper.\n \nThe part that makes this writing so “radical” is that we create a safe space for it all — raw feelings\, emotions\, experiences — and\, together\, we give voice to them in a supportive\, nonjudgmental environment.\n\n \nThis healing program offers a place for supporting one another and we stay clear of writing critique. Come and experience writing and sharing together.\n\n\n\nRadical Writing Space will be hosted Monthly on the 2nd Friday from 11am – 12:30pm ET. No previous writing experience necessary. Drop-ins welcome!\n\nUpcoming Dates: \n\n March 10\n April 14\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kiersten Gallagher\n\n\nKiersten has served as the Cancer Support Program Director for Smith Center since 2014. Before coming to Smith Center\, she had the privilege to serve individuals and families living with cancer at Wellness House of Annapolis. Kiersten aims to offer programs to reduce stress and help participants to see the world we live in from different perspectives. She thoroughly enjoys teaching yoga and creativity classes at Smith Center and encourages gentle movement and creativity in the healing process. Kiersten is a certified yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance and also has her YCAT (Yoga Therapy in Cancer and Chronic Illness) Professional Certification through the Integral Yoga Academy. She has completed Patient Navigation training through Smith Center’s Institute for Integrative Oncology Navigation and has also completed the Commonweal Healing Circles: Advanced Cancer Support Training. Kiersten is also certified in CLIMB®(Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery) a program that aims to build upon the strengths of children and increase his/her ability to cope with stress associated with a parent’s illness. She believes in a holistic approach to healing\, human relationships and is grateful for each and every day. In her spare time\, you may find Kiersten laughing with friends\, cycling\, taking art classes\, practicing yoga and spending time with her husband Shane\, son Liam\, and dogs Beans and Pablo.

SUMMARY:Being Together Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing olivia@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Linda Seabright\n\nMindfulness is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as it was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Ph.D.\n\nDr. Kabat-Zinn and his program were featured prominently in the award-winning PBS television series Healing and the Mind. The profound effects of this work have begun to be strongly supported by a large body of scientific research.\n\nSpecifically\, mindfulness helps you access the ability to be non-judgmental\, compassionate\, patient\, present and aware. You wouldn’t have come this far if these qualities did not exist in you somewhere. Possible benefits may be a greater sense of peace and well-being.\n\nWe will take a few moments to check into how we’re feeling in the beginning of the meditation and afterward. We’ll sit or lie comfortably and go through a slightly different guided meditation each week. No experience needed.\nBeing Together Mindfulness meets weekly on Fridays from 12:00pm – 12:30pm ET.\n\nSuggested Donation: $5/session\n\n\n\n\nAbout Linda Seabright\n\n\n Linda Seabright has been teaching Mindfulness and Meditation since she completed her training in MBSR\, or Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction\, at the University of California\, San Diego\, School of Medicine in 2016. Linda is a life-long practitioner of yoga\, a cancer survivor\, and has studied expressive art therapy since 2010. Her passion  for artistic and musical expression have inspired her to bring the same dedication to her meditation teachings\, bringing a wide array of experience to her practice. She also teaches trauma-based meditation to nonprofits and has developed a series of meditations to help bring peace and balance into people’s lives. More information at www.jazzmeditation.com.

SUMMARY:Healing Circle for Young Adults with Metastatic Breast Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Becky Bindrim & Samara Spence\n\nWe are a demand-driven and patient-led in-person and online community support group for young women and men (diagnosed between the age of 18 – 45ish) with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) in the DC\, MD\, and VA area. We have created this group as a means of providing both a safe community support space for people with MBC\, as well as peer-led and expert-led information on living with breast cancer. This group is new and independent of any established breast cancer organization\, though we are are in complete gratitude to the Smith Center for hosting us.\n\n\n\nWe facilitate our group in a democratic and participatory manner; in essence\, our group is your group! Interested new members\, kindly contact programs@smithcenter.org for an informal intake before coming to your first meeting.\n\nThe group meetings alternate between the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 8-9pm ET and the 2nd Saturday of the month from 10-11am ET.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n Saturday\, March 11 (10-11am ET)\n Wednesday\, April 12 (8-9pm ET)\n Saturday\, May 13 (10-11am ET)\n Wednesday\, June 14 (8-9pm ET)\n\n\n\n\nAbout Becky Bindrim\n\nMy name is Becky. I am a mother (of 2)\, wife\, daughter\, sister (to 3)\, friend\, and thriver. I was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) at the age of 34 while nursing my then 14-month-old daughter. In those first few weeks I felt every single emotion there was to feel… scared\, confused\, grateful for another day. My oncologist at the time had referred me to the Young Adults with MBC support group at the Smith Center and it brought comfort. My concerns were validated\, my anxiety eased\, I felt “seen” by everyone who is walking this path with me. I was no longer alone\, I was hopeful. \nI am excited to co-facilitate this group and help bring comfort and support to every young adult living with this disease. This population faces unique challenges; some of us have young children\, others never got the opportunity to have kids\, some are trying to manage side effects while working full-time\, others have quit their job and pursued their true passion. We have created a beautiful community and welcome those recently diagnosed and those who have been thriving for years. \n\nAbout Samara Spence\n\nMy name is Samara. I live in Washington\, DC\, with my husband and 2 cats. I moved to DC in 2014 to work in the government as an attorney\, and I’m still a lawyer in my professional life. I was diagnosed with MBC at age 40 after finding a lump in my own breast. Since then\, my world has been turned upside down. I’ve had to learn new skills\, new boundaries\, and an entirely new language — I joke that I’m working on the unofficial graduate degree I never wanted in breast cancer oncology. The Young Adults with MBC group has been a silver lining for me. These amazing young people are knowledgeable\, helpful\, honest\, and\, above all\, give me hope. I’m honored to co-facilitate this group with Becky.

SUMMARY:Stitched Together
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Denise Feldman\n\nStitched Together\nWe’re all part of the same cloth… \n\nJoin us for a Stitching Circle! Denise Feldman\, a local mixed-media artist and cancer thriver\, hosts this monthly gathering in (virtual) community as we talk and stitch—a powerful meditative and healing practice. Gathering as many have done for centuries\, Denise will share tips and ideas for using needle and thread to bring joy and creativity to our everyday lives. Use her ideas to jump start your own\, or bring your favorite hand work projects and join us for community stitching time!\n \nThis community stitching circle is for you! For example\, maybe you’ve been hand sewing for years; you might be interested in exploring the recent revival of the “slow-stitch” movement; maybe you are are a needle pointer with a project to finish. Or\, you might simply enjoy the meditative nature of hand making with needle and thread.\n \nYou may consider bringing:\n\n needles and thread\,\n an old pair of jeans or other clothing that was headed to charity\,\n left over fabric from another project\,\n or simply bring yourself for some (virtual) time in community.\n\n\n\n\n\nStitched Together will be offered Monthly on Saturdays 10:00 – 11:30am ET. \n\nUpcoming Dates: \n\n March 11\n April 8\n May 13\n\nSuggested Donation: $10\n\n\n\nAbout Denise Feldman\nDenise Feldman is a local mixed media artist who discovered the power of creativity as a healing practice after her treatment for breast cancer in 2014. As a creative ‘dabbler’ who loves working with various materials and surfaces\, Denise shares her mixed media processes and soulful perspective with the hope of inspiring others to tell their stories ‘on and off the page’ and clear space for life’s chapters yet to come.\n\n“My philosophy is simply that telling our stories helps us heal by giving us the space to process our own experiences and connect with each other. Getting our stories out from our hearts and our heads helps make room for the next chapter to happen…the one just waiting there in the wings.” ~Denise

SUMMARY:Painting for Life
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Noelle Imparato\n\n\nThis workshop provides a safe and powerful learning container using community building and a “mindfulness painting” practice to foster healing\, spiritual awakening\, and personal transformation.\n\nYou are invited to work from the heart and express your drama in forms and colors. As you paint\, you process your emotions and liberate yourself from the psychological and physical disease they may cause. This is a workshop for processing feelings through painting and group sharing. It is not a good space for finishing existing projects and using other mediums.\n\nBy intentionally focusing on the emotional process rather than the artistic product\, participants are able to unleash their creative powers and produce striking works\, while by sharing their creative process they gain the insight and wisdom often hidden in works created in a state of letting go.\n\nFor more information about Painting for Life and what you can expect during a session\, please explore this manual:\nPFL MANUAL\nTime Slots (please specify when registering):\n\n 10am-12pm\n 3pm-5pm\n\nParticipants are encouraged to drop-in for any session and attend as many sessions as they would like.\nSession Schedule:\nThe Painting For Life workshop on Zoom consists of a 1-hour painting session framed by a 30 minute opening circle (which can often be 45 minutes) and a 30 minute closing circle.\n\nOpening Circle – In the opening circle we build a safe and powerful We-Space\ncommunity characterized by “presencing\,” sharing with honesty and integrity\, deep listening\, and resonating in harmony with each other. Noelle will start this opening circle by giving a quick prompting and end it with a 3-minute meditation before sending people off to paint for exactly 1 hour.\n\n1-hour Painting Session – Participants paint at home\, using cheap materials such as paper\, tempera paints\, watercolors\, acrylics\, or pastels\, Crayolas\, and even color pens. When the hour is over\, people take a picture of their painting and text it to Noelle before coming back to the Zoom room.\n\nClosing Circle – Noelle then shares each painting on the screen as people explore their process while the group may offer feedback and further insights get sparked. We end this closing circle with a group hugs as we shout “May all beings be happy!” thus fusing personal and collective healing together.\n\nSuggested Donation: $15\n\n\n\nAbout Noelle Imparato\n\nArmed with a PhD and her lifelong experience\, Noelle Imparato created Painting For Life\, a process art painting workshop envisioned as a tool for healing\, awakening\, and personal transformation. After 20 years of running it from her home studio in Los Angeles\, France\, Spain\, and Baltimore\, she moved to Zoom due to the pandemic. It allowed her community to grow more international with participants from Canada\, Europe\, and India. Noelle’s life experience includes training and working in architecture and film\, a Ph.D. in mythological studies with an emphasis in depth psychology\, a 30-year mindfulness meditation practice\, and a multitude of retreats especially at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur CA. She is currently writing “Painting For Life\,” a 2-volume book about her personal experience with the healing power of art\, and the method she\ndeveloped with her workshop.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Journaling
DESCRIPTION:Part 2/4. This program series is being offered virtually through Zoom. If you would like to join the series\, please email programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith John Casey\n\nIn Sustainable Journaling\, simple strategies help you create a daily journaling practice that can be sustained over time.\n \nWe will concentrate more on the practice of journaling than on the content and intention behind it. As a result\, we can approach journaling less as a means to an end and more as an end in itself. You will be supported in creating a sustainable and fulfilling practice. You can either maintain the practice on its own or incorporate other journaling strategies.\n \nTopics discussed will include:\n\n Easy strategies for starting and maintaining a journal\n The advantages of creating a daily habit of journaling\n The benefits of both the practice and the product\n Overcoming obstacles to creating a daily practice \n Privacy concerns\n How to start your journal at any point in the past\n Continuing your practice if/when you miss a day\n Creating a structured yet adaptable practice\, while considering your lifestyle and preferences\n\n\n \nEach session incorporates presentations as well as opportunities for group sharing that addresses different learning and engagement styles. Additionally\, homework assignments easily accommodate participants with busy schedules.\n\n\n\nSustainable Journaling will be offered as a four-part workshop on the following dates: \n\n Sundays\, March 5\, 12\, 19 & 26\, 10-11:15 AM ET\n\nParticipants are encouraged to attend all four workshop sessions to get the most out of the Sustainable Journaling process. By registering above\, you will be registered for all four sessions. Please let us know in advance if you will not be able to attend all four sessions.\nParticipants who joined in our previous series are welcome back as space is available. Please email Kiersten at kiersten@smithcenter.org to inquire about space.\n\n\nSuggested Donation: $25 (4-part series)\n\n\n\nAbout John Casey\n\n\nJohn Casey works as a barber in Brooklyn\, NY. This trade affords him the opportunity to meet and talk with many different people on a daily basis. Learning that many of his customers shared his interest in keeping a journal but didn’t know how to start or to maintain one\, he decided to create a workshop that would allow him to share what he’d learned about this rewarding practice.\nIn his free time\, John loves being in his car and is grateful for any opportunity he gets to drive through to the Hudson Valley where he grew up. He has a BFA in Painting and enjoys drawing\, painting and visiting art museums. His favorite conversation topics are music\, film and anything pertaining to behavioral psychology.\n\n\nhttps://www.sustainablejournaling.com/

SUMMARY:Healing Circle for Moms with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Niya Kight\n\nThis ongoing healing circle will focus on the unique needs of mothers\, with children of any age\, who are living with cancer. No matter where you find yourself on your journey you will have a chance to be with others who share in your experience. This shared experience will often lead to profound learning and healing.\n\nSome of our children are bound to need us during this program. Please don’t worry about disruptions to care for your child(ren).\n\n\n\nWhat is a Healing Circle?\n\nHealing Circles bring together small numbers of people impacted by a condition or circumstance to share experiences and harvest collective wisdom.  Healing Circles is a peer-led process by which people support each other through deep listening and shared learning. When working at its best\, this collaborative conversation model leads to authentic and deep connectivity and can create wisdom and healing for participants.\n\nThe Healing Circle for Moms with Cancer meets Monthly on the 2nd Monday of each month from 11:00am-12:00pm ET.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n March 13\n April 10\n May 8\n\n\n\n\nAbout Niya Kight\n\n\nNiya Kight was diagnosed with Stage II\, ER/PR + Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in November 2019 on her 31st birthday\, while 12 weeks pregnant. Once Niya reached the middle of her second trimester\, she underwent a mastectomy and four rounds of chemotherapy before delivering her daughter in May. Niya is currently finishing the last four rounds of chemotherapy and next up on the road to recovery is radiation. When Niya embarked upon this journey\, she chose to view it as her rebirth and shared that “she would rise healthier and stronger than ever after this spiritual transformation”. Niya has done just that as she focused inwardly to determine the changes she needed to make in her life\, learned to accept help\, and shared her vulnerability and experience with others. Niya is passionate about raising awareness about pregnancy and breast cancer because many people do not know that it is possible to have cancer while pregnant\, let alone that it can actually be treated during pregnancy. Niya remembers the loneliness she felt while navigating breast cancer while pregnant and wants to help eliminate that additional stress for other women.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Each Other: A Healing Circle for Muslim Sisters Living with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Gina Petonito\n \nFor Indeed\, with hardship comes ease\nIndeed\, with hardship comes ease.\nAl-Inshirah 94:5-6\nCancer! The word evokes fear and dread. And then the unthinkable happens. You get your diagnosis\, and just like that\, your life turns upside down. You enter a realm of tests\, procedures\, infusions\, radiation\, and operations. You are surrounded by people: caregivers\, healing professionals\, family\, and friends. Yet\, you feel all alone. Sisters\, you can find companionship on this journey. In a healing circle. The Smith Center for Healing and the Arts has graciously agreed to sponsor a healing circle just for us: Muslim Sisters. The Circle will provide a safe and accepting space\, where we can share our stories and heal together. Yes\, we are patient. But healing circles allow us to persevere. Let’s let our healing circle provide us with the ease Allah (SWT) promises and that we so richly\ndeserve.\n\nThis circle will meet every second and fourth Mondays thereafter until July 10.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n March 13 & 27\n April 10 & 24\n May 8 & 22\n June 12 & 26\n July 10\n\n\n\n\nAbout Gina Petonito\, PhD\n\n\nGina Petonito is a retired university professor\, current business and life coach\, and a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Stage IIa\, ER/PR+ invasive ductal carcinoma in November 2021\, upgraded to Level IIIa after surgery. She underwent treatment throughout 2022 and is currently cancer free. Determined to have a productive life despite the arduous procedures\, Gina completed an 83\,000-word historical fiction manuscript\, and moved forward with her\nbusinesses Writing Your Way and Academic Womxn Reclaim Your Power.\n\nA convert to Islam since 1984\, Gina created a gratitude series for Muslim women\, titled 99 Days of Gratitude: A Practice for Sisters. This practice\, uploaded to YouTube focuses upon one of the Beautiful Names of God each day\, and suggests related supplications\, gratitude items\, and affirmations. The practice allowed her to place cancer into its proper perspective as one negative in a life of abundant blessings\, ma sha Allah. Nevertheless\, cancer often plunges a person into loneliness\, which support can alleviate. I firmly believe that together we sisters can strengthen each other in our deen and in our worldly life. Together\, we can come to terms with cancer\, be patient AND persevere.\n\nGina lives in the greater Cincinnati\, Ohio area and spends her free time at home with her beloved family. She enjoys studying history\, reading\, writing\, and connecting with women all over the globe.

After a few years of regular practice\, she knew she wanted to share her positive experiences with others. She has been leading yoga classes in the DC area since 2007 after completing her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Nth Degree Yoga with Martha Rosen. In 2011\, she went back to earn her RYT500. Her personal practice is inspired by Integral Yoga and Sivananda Yoga\, both of which incorporate body and mind into the practice.

SUMMARY:Creating Symbols for Personal Power
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Simone Banks Mackey (They/Them/Theirs)\n \nUsing modern and ancient techniques of developing symbols allows your imagination to wonder and form a personal affirmation sigil. A Sigil\, in a greater sense\, is a symbol that represents a meaning. Where they differ is how/why we create them. This process is not only therapeutic but extremely individualized. Each sigil contains specific messaging that is meant to empower you. Using meditation\, herbal teas\, movement\, food\, music\, and/or scents\, we intentionally create an environment that empowers us to imbue our intentions into our sigil fully. A process that can result in the simplest of shapes to the most elaborate of forms.\n\nAfter your affirmation sigil is created it is charged with your energy and can be used whenever you need to affirm your power. Whether that be on your hallway mirror\, daily bag\, passenger dashboard\, clothes/shoes\, or even yourself its intention will hold.\n\nThe theme of the month will be shared at the beginning of each session.\n \nSuggested Materials: \n\n Writing utensils (pens\, markers\, paint\, etc.)\n Canvas (paper\, book\, hat\, guitar\, etc.)\n Water (for drinking)\n Set your “empowerment mood” (clothing\, food\, scents\, lighting\, etc.)\n\n\nSuggested Donation: $10\n\n\n\nAbout Simone Banks Mackey\nSince childhood\, Simone Banks Mackey (They/Them/Theirs) has always been an eccentric being that had an insatiable passion for life and helping others. After attending undergraduate school to study multiple Studio Arts disciplines and nonprofit management they decided to continue community-centered work. Teaching preschool offered Simone the opportunity to creatively expose children to multiple forms of art. However\, they realized the magnitude of how structural stability within the home affects both parents’ mental/emotional/physical wellbeing and the children’s cognitive development. Simone then decided to work with grassroots organization that provided families with tools to be self-sufficient. It was during this time Eccentric Whims was born. While creating and hosting programming to artistically teach parents and children\, Simone realized how they could combine their passion for art with community uplifting. Eccentric Whims catapults love and healing into the world by using a multitude of traditional and nontraditional art forms to foster creative thinking and promote healing/wellness while building community. Through carefully crafted community events surrounding any range and of non/traditional art forms such as mixed media collages\, decor/crafts\, visual media\, and movement Simone creates safe spaces for people to express themselves and/or learn. Art is universal and through Art\, we can communicate\, commune\, and create a greater society.

In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Rachel Ress\, MSW\, LICSW\nIn Partnership with Cancer Support Community\n\n\n\n\nThis group is designed for cancer survivors who have completed their primary cancer treatment(s) and are now either post-treatment or on maintenance medication (such as hormonal therapy). Cancer can be emotionally and physically draining — many times we aren’t able to fully process the experience until after treatment is over and we are trying to get back to our “normal” lives. The struggle and expectation to find “normal” again can also be an overwhelming process. This group is a space where you can talk openly about these issues and process the trauma of cancer with other survivors.\nClick here to review our Online Group Participation Rules.\n\n\n\nThe Survivorship Support Group will meet Monthly on the 2nd Tuesday from 6:30-8:00pm ET.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n March 14\n April 11\n May 9\n\n\n\n\nAbout Rachel Ress\, MSW\, LICSW\n\nRachel is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker serving as Cancer Support Community Washington DC’s (CSC DC) Community Navigator.

Join us for Outside the Lines\, where a facilitator will help you reclaim art-making as a healing tool through guided creative projects. Participants who feel comfortable working on their own projects are also welcome to do so.\nFor this month’s session\, we will be creating collages for The Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities Program (AHP) at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Call for Art.\n\nThe Arts and Humanities Program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (AHP) invites us to create 4×4-inch collage art for its first ever Call for Art: “Art for a Cause”. This is a call specifically for collage art in conjunction with World Collage Day (May 13) 2023.\n\nAll works submitted will be displayed and then made available to patients\, caregivers\, their families\, and hospital staff. Each work will be attached to a blank greeting card and will have a sticker indicating that it is original art generously donated to the hospital community. Works will not be sold nor returned to the artists.\n\nIf you have any questions about the Call for Art\, please contact jenniferwilkinpenick@gmail.com directly.\n\n\n\nOutside the Lines is held Bi-Monthly on Wednesdays from 10:30am – 12:00pm. SUMMARY:What to Expect as a Caregiver
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Julia Rowland\, PhD\n\n\nCancer caregivers are ‘hidden’ survivors in the cancer journey.  Many wonder if the help they provide is useful\, even though research tells us that caregivers are vital to the wellbeing of their care recipient.\n\n\nCome learn how caregivers make a difference\, discuss the common challenges that caregivers confront\, and learn tools and techniques to take good care of yourself.\n\n\n\nAbout Julia Rowland\, PhD\n\n\nJulia Rowland\, PhD\, who joined Smith Center in October 2017\, comes to this position as a long-time clinician\, researcher and teacher in the area of psychosocial aspects of cancer. She has worked with and conducted competitively funded research among both pediatric and adult cancer survivors and their families\, and published broadly in psycho-oncology\, including co-editing\, along with Dr. Jimmie Holland\, the ground-breaking text\, Handbook of Psychooncology.  She has also been a frequent speaker on cancer survivorship\, or life after cancer\, for both professional and lay audiences.\n\nJulia received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in psychosocial oncology. While at MSKCC\, where she held joint appointments in pediatrics and neurology\, Julia helped to develop and was the first Director of the Post-Treatment Resource Program\, one of the first non-medical survivorship care programs to be offered by a major cancer center in the U.S. In 1990 she moved with her husband and two young children to Washington\, DC to become founding Director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Georgetown University and the Lombardi Cancer Center. There she helped expand services to meet the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and families\, launched some of the first quality of life clinical trials\, and also introduced a program to enable first year medical students to learn the art of caring for those living through and beyond cancer from survivors themselves and Lombardi faculty. Nine years later\, in September of 1999\, she was recruited to the National Cancer Institute to become the first\, full-time Director of the Office of Cancer Survivorship\, a position in which she served for 18 years\, championing the growth of survivorship research and care\, before stepping down in September 2017 to assume her new role at Smith Center. Although new to the team\, Julia is no stranger to Smith Center. She knew Smith Center’s founder\, Barbara Smith Coleman\, and has volunteered her expertise across the years as a speaker\, group leader and staff member for both the 1-day and weeklong residential retreats. Julia brings to her new role a passion to translate what research has taught us about healing in the context of cancer to the broader community\, in essence\, taking the science of survivorship from the lab bench to the park bench.

SUMMARY:Energy Balancing
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Balancing team continues to offer distance sessions. If you wish to receive\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith the Energy Balancing Team\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. When these energies are out of balance\, all our body systems can become askew. One key to bringing us back into balance is deep relaxation. This is just what our volunteers provide – a half-hour of stress reducing relaxation to calm the body and enhance our well-being.\n\nMost likely you are familiar with many of the body’s systems such as the respiratory system\, the digestive system\, the endocrine system\, the skeletal system and so on. But are you aware that we also have subtle energy systems\, systems that cannot be seen\, cannot be measured\, cannot be felt. Perhaps you know of some; the most familiar are the aura (also known as the biofield)\, the meridians\, the chakras.\n\nThese subtle energy systems were very familiar to the ancients. They used them regularly to bring the body into energetic balance. When the body’s energies are in balance\, we function at a higher vibration and are more relaxed\, more joyful\, more centered and able to enjoy life more productively. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nEnergy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n 1:00pm\n 2:20pm\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Energy Balancing Team\nAbout Anne Molofsky\nAnne has always been interested in promoting health and wellness. She had a forty-year career as a nutritionist\, beginning as a research nutritionist in several NIH-funded clinical trials\, then working for the federal government in policy and education\, and subsequently counselling clients in her private practice. She received her reiki training over 10 years ago and was able to offer reiki sessions to her nutrition clients as part of their treatment. Since 2013 Anne has also volunteered at Walter Reed offering reiki sessions to Wounded Warriors and their families. She became a Reiki Master Teacher in 2017. Anne is thrilled to be joining the wonderful Energy Balancing Team at the Smith Center!\nAbout Margaret Haggerty\nIt is a privilege to be part of the energy balancing team for Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.\nHaving had a long and gratifying career as a registered nurse\, I bring a wide range of experiences. Before my retirement nine years ago\, I had worked for 47 years as a nurse in a variety of capacities. Whether I was taking care of a tiny two-pound NICU infant or doing diabetic teaching for a centenarian\, I realized that there was a larger Presence who was always guiding me. And I believe deeply that whatever experience of healing we receive\, involves body\, mind and spirit. I became a massage therapist and Reiki Master in order to incorporate a more deliberate approach to healing touch. It was a privilege to work with many clients who were dealing with cancer. What a joy it was to offer some hope and gentle touch as they faced many medical and emotional challenges. Now in my later years I am happy to bring the soft\, caring touch of energy balancing to help those who come to Smith Center\, to relax in order for. their bodies to mend and their spirits to heal.\nAbout Pat Spellman\n\n\nPat studied English literature and has a special interest in reading and writing poetry. She has been certified as a Reiki master and as a practitioner of reflexology and Feldenkrais movement. She is a long-time member of the Self-Realization Fellowship\, which teaches meditation methods and principles for harmonious living. After a career in publications in DC\, Pat retired in Baltimore where she continues her active interest in the Smith Center and its clients.\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team. Sylvia is a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner and a Reiki Master Teacher. For many years she has managed a Reiki Volunteer group at a seniors’ residence and has served for 6 years as a Reiki volunteer in GWU Hospital. She is delighted to now work with a dedicated and wonderful team to address the balancing of one’s subtle energies in order to allow the body to completely relax. She has an independent practice in Kensington\, MD. To learn more about Sylvia and subtle energies\, please visit her website www.sylviasturm.com.

All support group meetings are paired with a stress reduction activity (either Zumba or Yoga). \nTo register\, call Claudia at Nueva Vida: 202.223.9100.
