SUMMARY:Energy Balancing
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Balancing team continues to offer distance sessions. If you wish to receive\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith the Energy Balancing Team\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. When these energies are out of balance\, all our body systems can become askew. One key to bringing us back into balance is deep relaxation. This is just what our volunteers provide – a half-hour of stress reducing relaxation to calm the body and enhance our well-being.\n\nMost likely you are familiar with many of the body’s systems such as the respiratory system\, the digestive system\, the endocrine system\, the skeletal system and so on. But are you aware that we also have subtle energy systems\, systems that cannot be seen\, cannot be measured\, cannot be felt. Perhaps you know of some; the most familiar are the aura (also known as the biofield)\, the meridians\, the chakras.\n\nThese subtle energy systems were very familiar to the ancients. They used them regularly to bring the body into energetic balance. When the body’s energies are in balance\, we function at a higher vibration and are more relaxed\, more joyful\, more centered and able to enjoy life more productively. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nEnergy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n 1:00pm\n 2:20pm\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Energy Balancing Team\nAbout Anne Molofsky\nAnne has always been interested in promoting health and wellness. She had a forty-year career as a nutritionist\, beginning as a research nutritionist in several NIH-funded clinical trials\, then working for the federal government in policy and education\, and subsequently counselling clients in her private practice. She received her reiki training over 10 years ago and was able to offer reiki sessions to her nutrition clients as part of their treatment. Since 2013 Anne has also volunteered at Walter Reed offering reiki sessions to Wounded Warriors and their families. She became a Reiki Master Teacher in 2017. Anne is thrilled to be joining the wonderful Energy Balancing Team at the Smith Center!\nAbout Margaret Haggerty\nIt is a privilege to be part of the energy balancing team for Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.\nHaving had a long and gratifying career as a registered nurse\, I bring a wide range of experiences. Before my retirement nine years ago\, I had worked for 47 years as a nurse in a variety of capacities. Whether I was taking care of a tiny two-pound NICU infant or doing diabetic teaching for a centenarian\, I realized that there was a larger Presence who was always guiding me. And I believe deeply that whatever experience of healing we receive\, involves body\, mind and spirit. I became a massage therapist and Reiki Master in order to incorporate a more deliberate approach to healing touch. It was a privilege to work with many clients who were dealing with cancer. What a joy it was to offer some hope and gentle touch as they faced many medical and emotional challenges. Now in my later years I am happy to bring the soft\, caring touch of energy balancing to help those who come to Smith Center\, to relax in order for. their bodies to mend and their spirits to heal.\nAbout Pat Spellman\n\n\nPat studied English literature and has a special interest in reading and writing poetry. She has been certified as a Reiki master and as a practitioner of reflexology and Feldenkrais movement. She is a long-time member of the Self-Realization Fellowship\, which teaches meditation methods and principles for harmonious living. After a career in publications in DC\, Pat retired in Baltimore where she continues her active interest in the Smith Center and its clients.\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team. Sylvia is a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner and a Reiki Master Teacher. For many years she has managed a Reiki Volunteer group at a seniors’ residence and has served for 6 years as a Reiki volunteer in GWU Hospital. She is delighted to now work with a dedicated and wonderful team to address the balancing of one’s subtle energies in order to allow the body to completely relax. She has an independent practice in Kensington\, MD. To learn more about Sylvia and subtle energies\, please visit her website www.sylviasturm.com.

Tigerlily only collects this information for data purposes and it will not be shared with any other parties.\n\n\nMindfulness is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as it was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Ph.D.\n\nDr. Kabat-Zinn and his program were featured prominently in the award-winning PBS television series Healing and the Mind. The profound effects of this work have begun to be strongly supported by a large body of scientific research.\n\nSpecifically\, mindfulness helps you access the ability to be non-judgmental\, compassionate\, patient\, present and aware. You wouldn’t have come this far if these qualities did not exist in you somewhere. Possible benefits may be a greater sense of peace and well-being.\n\nWe will take a few moments to check into how we’re feeling in the beginning of the meditation and afterward. We’ll sit or lie comfortably and go through a slightly different guided meditation each week. No experience needed.\nBeing Together Mindfulness meets weekly on Fridays from 12:00pm – 12:30pm ET.\n\nSuggested Donation: $5/session\n\n\n\n\nAbout Linda Seabright\n\n\n Linda Seabright has been teaching Mindfulness and Meditation since she completed her training in MBSR\, or Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction\, at the University of California\, San Diego\, School of Medicine in 2016. Linda is a life-long practitioner of yoga\, a cancer survivor\, and has studied expressive art therapy since 2010. Her passion  for artistic and musical expression have inspired her to bring the same dedication to her meditation teachings\, bringing a wide array of experience to her practice. She also teaches trauma-based meditation to nonprofits and has developed a series of meditations to help bring peace and balance into people’s lives. More information at www.jazzmeditation.com.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Each Other: A Healing Circle for Muslim Sisters Living with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Gina Petonito\nFor Indeed\, with hardship comes ease\nIndeed\, with hardship comes ease.\nAl-Inshirah 94:5-6\nCancer! The word evokes fear and dread. And then the unthinkable happens. You get your diagnosis\, and just like that\, your life turns upside down. You enter a realm of tests\, procedures\, infusions\, radiation\, and operations. You are surrounded by people: caregivers\, healing professionals\, family\, and friends. Yet\, you feel all alone. Sisters\, you can find companionship on this journey. In a healing circle. The Smith Center for Healing and the Arts has graciously agreed to sponsor a healing circle just for us: Muslim Sisters. The Circle will provide a safe and accepting space\, where we can share our stories and heal together. Yes\, we are patient. But healing circles allow us to persevere. Let’s let our healing circle provide us with the ease Allah (SWT) promises and that we so richly\ndeserve.\n\nThis circle will meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Meetings will continue for 12 weeks.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n July 1 & 15\n August 5 & 19\n September 2 & 16\n October 7 & 21\n\n\n\n\nAbout Gina Petonito\, PhD\n\n\nGina Petonito is a retired university professor\, current business and life coach\, and a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Stage IIa\, ER/PR+ invasive ductal carcinoma in November 2021\, upgraded to Level IIIa after surgery. She underwent treatment throughout 2022 and is currently cancer free. Determined to have a productive life despite the arduous procedures\, Gina completed an 83\,000-word historical fiction manuscript\, and moved forward with her\nbusinesses Writing Your Way and Academic Womxn Reclaim Your Power.\n\nA convert to Islam since 1984\, Gina created a gratitude series for Muslim women\, titled 99 Days of Gratitude: A Practice for Sisters. This practice\, uploaded to YouTube focuses upon one of the Beautiful Names of God each day\, and suggests related supplications\, gratitude items\, and affirmations. The practice allowed her to place cancer into its proper perspective as one negative in a life of abundant blessings\, ma sha Allah. Nevertheless\, cancer often plunges a person into loneliness\, which support can alleviate. I firmly believe that together we sisters can strengthen each other in our deen and in our worldly life. Together\, we can come to terms with cancer\, be patient AND persevere.\n\nGina lives in the greater Cincinnati\, Ohio area and spends her free time at home with her beloved family. She enjoys studying history\, reading\, writing\, and connecting with women all over the globe.

Denise Feldman\, a local mixed-media artist and cancer thriver\, hosts this monthly gathering in (virtual) community as we talk and stitch—a powerful meditative and healing practice. Use her ideas to jump start your own\, or bring your favorite hand work projects and join us for community stitching time!\n \nThis community stitching circle is for you! For example\, maybe you’ve been hand sewing for years; you might be interested in exploring the recent revival of the “slow-stitch” movement; maybe you are are a needle pointer with a project to finish. Or\, you might simply enjoy the meditative nature of hand making with needle and thread.\n \nYou may consider bringing:\n\n needles and thread\,\n an old pair of jeans or other clothing that was headed to charity\,\n left over fabric from another project\,\n or simply bring yourself for some (virtual) time in community.\n\n\n\n\n\nStitched Together will be offered Monthly on Saturdays 10:00 – 11:30am ET. \n\nUpcoming Dates: \n\n July 8\n\nSuggested Donation: $10\n\n\n\nAbout Denise Feldman\nDenise Feldman is a local mixed media artist who discovered the power of creativity as a healing practice after her treatment for breast cancer in 2014. As a creative ‘dabbler’ who loves working with various materials and surfaces\, Denise shares her mixed media processes and soulful perspective with the hope of inspiring others to tell their stories ‘on and off the page’ and clear space for life’s chapters yet to come.\n\n“My philosophy is simply that telling our stories helps us heal by giving us the space to process our own experiences and connect with each other. Getting our stories out from our hearts and our heads helps make room for the next chapter to happen…the one just waiting there in the wings.” ~Denise

SUMMARY:Healing Circle for Parents with Cancer Playdate
DESCRIPTION:The playdate will be held in-person. For more details about the location\, please see below. In order to attend\, please register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org\nOffered in partnership with the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts\, Bright Spot Network\, Life with Cancer\, Hope Connections\, Ourisman Breast Center\, Ulman Foundation\, and Wellness House of Annapolis. \n\nThe Healing Circle for Parents with Cancer will have two meet ups this summer at playgrounds/splash parks in DC. It will be an opportunity for the adults to talk while the kids have fun on the playground/splash park. Parents with cancer (newly diagnosed\, active treatment and NED) are welcome as well as their partners.  One will be held on July 8 and the other will be held on August 5th. In the fall\, a virtual Healing Circle for Parents with Cancer will start with occasional in-person meet-ups.\n\nThe July Playdate will be at the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center at 1100 Michigan Ave NE\, Washington\, DC 20017. The meeting spot will be under the tree right next to the playground/splash park. We will have a table set up with a Smith Center BSN meet up sign with snacks and sparkling water. Please feel free to bring your own lunch and picnic blanket.\nFor more information about our Healing Circle for Parents with Cancer beginning in the fall\, please read below.\n\nSmith Center’s Healing Circle for Moms with Cancer is being changed to the Healing Circle for Parents with Cancer and will now be hosted in partnership with Brightspot Network\, Life with Cancer\, Hope Connections\, Ourisman Breast Center\, Ulman Foundation\, and Wellness House of Annapolis. Effective July 1\, the Healing Circle for Moms with Cancer will no longer be on the Smith Center calendar. We will have play dates in DC during the summer and kick of the Healing Circle for Parents in September.\n\n\n\nWhat will happen next?\n\nIn an effort to expand the Healing Circle to more parents with cancer\, Smith Center is partnering with Bright Spot Network and other cancer organizations who can connect parents to this program. By broadening participation to all parents (not just moms) and working with several different national organizations supporting parents facing cancer\, you’ll be able to participate in Healing Circle for Parents with Cancer.\n\n\nWhat is the Healing Circle for Parents with Cancer?\n\n\n\n\nThis ongoing healing circle will focus on the unique needs of parents\, with children of any age\, who are living with cancer. No matter where you find yourself on your journey you will have a chance to be with others who share in your experience. This shared experience will often lead to profound learning and healing.\n\nSome of our children are bound to need us during this program. Please don’t worry about disruptions to care for your child(ren).\n\nWhat are Healing Circles?\n\nHealing Circles bring together small numbers of people impacted by a condition or circumstance to share experiences and harvest collective wisdom.  Healing Circles is a peer-led process by which people support each other through deep listening and shared learning. When working at its best\, this collaborative conversation model leads to authentic and deep connectivity and can create wisdom and healing for participants.

No experience needed.\nBeing Together Mindfulness meets bi-weekly on Mondays from 12:00pm – 12:30pm ET.\n\nSuggested Donation: $5/session\n\n\n\n\nAbout Linda Seabright\n\n\n Linda Seabright has been teaching Mindfulness and Meditation since she completed her training in MBSR\, or Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction\, at the University of California\, San Diego\, School of Medicine in 2016. Please indicate in the notes if you plan to attend virtually or in person.\n\nwith Julia Rowland\, Ph.D\n\n\nHearing the words\, ‘there is no evidence of disease\,’ may not be fully reassuring when cancer treatment ends. Worry that you may still have cancer (or develop it again!) can be overwhelming. Fear of cancer recurrence is the most common long-term effect of living with a history of cancer. If this is true for you\, you are not alone. Come learn about the triggers of fear\, and simple tools you can use to tame your own worry demon and reclaim your plans for the future. This program is offered in partnership with the Washington Cancer Institute at Medstar Washington Hospital Center.\nAbout Julia H. After a few years of regular practice\, she knew she wanted to share her positive experiences with others. She has been leading yoga classes in the DC area since 2007 after completing her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Nth Degree Yoga with Martha Rosen. In 2011\, she went back to earn her RYT500.
