SUMMARY:Paint and Sip
DESCRIPTION:This program is currently full. If you would like to be added to a waitlist\, please email programs@smithcenter.org. \nwith Lauren DeMarco\n\n\n“What I dream of is an art of balance\, of purity and serenity…a soothing\, calming influence on the mind\, rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” – Henri Matisse\n\nFor artist Henri Matisse\, making art was a way to decompress and spark joy. Take advantage of the restorative effects of creating art at an in-person Paint & Sip at Smith Center. An instructor will guide you through easy-to-follow steps to create your own interpretation of an abstract painting inspired by Matisse. No artistic skill or experience is required for this fun evening of painting and socializing. Supplies\, snacks\, and drinks will be provided. Come meet someone new\, use your creativity\, and leave more refreshed than you arrived.\n\nThis event is open to the community and free of charge to ensure that it is accessible to everyone. \n\nSuggested Donation: $20\n\n\n\nAddress:\n\nSmith Center for Healing and the Arts\n\n1632 U Street NW\n\nWashington\, DC 20009\n\nFor those who haven’t been to Smith Center before\, Smith Center is a 15-minute walk from both the Metro Red Line (Dupont Circle) or Green Line (U Street Cardozo). For those driving\, there is On-street\, two-hour metered parking on U St and two-hour\, non-metered parking in the surrounding neighborhood.\n\n\n\nAbout Lauren DeMarco\n \nLauren is a graduate student in Georgetown University’s Master’s Program in Engaged and Public Humanities and a current intern at Smith Center. Prior to this\, she graduated from Wake Forest University with degrees in studio art and English. Lauren is an avid reader\, passionate artist\, and mediocre runner. Creative pursuits have always been a source of healing and joy for her\, so she is excited to connect with the Smith Center community through the arts.

After a few years of regular practice\, she knew she wanted to share her positive experiences with others. She has been leading yoga classes in the DC area since 2007 after completing her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Nth Degree Yoga with Martha Rosen. In 2011\, she went back to earn her RYT500. Her personal practice is inspired by Integral Yoga and Sivananda Yoga\, both of which incorporate body and mind into the practice.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Companioning
DESCRIPTION:Please email Olivia at programs@smithcenter.org for further information about the program.\nwith Carole O’Toole\n\nCancer often initiates an intense transformational process that can raise more questions than answers\, leading us to re-examine our beliefs and approach to life. We may feel called to explore opportunities for spiritual growth\, feeling a desire to connect with the sacred in a more conscious way and define more deeply life’s meaning in the face of cancer.\n\nRegardless of your personal beliefs or faith system\, working with a spiritual companion offers you an opportunity to reflect with another on what is going on for you spiritually\, and explore how to integrate your cancer experience with your personal beliefs.\n\nSpiritual Companions:\n\n \nProvide a safe\, trusting environment that invites stillness and reflection.\n\n \nSupport your spiritual growth and exploration\, your unique and personal journey.\n\n \nListen\, deeply and with compassion\, honoring your sacred story. This deep listening helps you to connect with your most authentic self and illuminate your unique spiritual path.\nSuggested Donation: $15\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Carole O’Toole\n\nCarole has served in many roles at Smith Center since 2006\, including Director of Residential and Virtual Retreats\, Director of the Institute of Integrative Oncology Navigation\, Co-Director and Co-Creator of Smith Center’s Integrative Navigation Training Program\, and as a member of and mentor for our integrative navigation team. Most recently\, Carole\, a survivor of an advanced cancer since 1994\,  felt called to companion others in exploring how illness offers opportunities for spiritual growth. In 2021\, Carole completed her training in Spiritual Direction from The Haden Institute\, with a particular focus on grief and loss and the spiritual challenges of living with cancer. She offers spiritual companioning services through the Smith Center and in her local community: www.cohealing.net.\n\n“Your soul already knows the way to wholeness and healing\, but often speaks to us in a small\, still voice. In our time together\, we create a nest for your soul to rest awhile\, allowing space for your sacred truth to be revealed.”\nCarole invites you to explore with her how to make meaning of your cancer experience and to look for where the holy is in your life. Currently\, limited space is available for new clients. Individual appointments are available via Zoom or by telephone and are free of charge.

SUMMARY:Energy Balancing
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Balancing team continues to offer distance sessions. If you wish to receive\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith the Energy Balancing Team\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. When these energies are out of balance\, all our body systems can become askew. One key to bringing us back into balance is deep relaxation. This is just what our volunteers provide – a half-hour of stress reducing relaxation to calm the body and enhance our well-being.\n\nMost likely you are familiar with many of the body’s systems such as the respiratory system\, the digestive system\, the endocrine system\, the skeletal system and so on. But are you aware that we also have subtle energy systems\, systems that cannot be seen\, cannot be measured\, cannot be felt. Perhaps you know of some; the most familiar are the aura (also known as the biofield)\, the meridians\, the chakras.\n\nThese subtle energy systems were very familiar to the ancients. They used them regularly to bring the body into energetic balance. When the body’s energies are in balance\, we function at a higher vibration and are more relaxed\, more joyful\, more centered and able to enjoy life more productively. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nEnergy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n 1:00pm\n 2:20pm\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Energy Balancing Team\nAbout Anne Molofsky\nAnne has always been interested in promoting health and wellness. She had a forty-year career as a nutritionist\, beginning as a research nutritionist in several NIH-funded clinical trials\, then working for the federal government in policy and education\, and subsequently counselling clients in her private practice. She received her reiki training over 10 years ago and was able to offer reiki sessions to her nutrition clients as part of their treatment. Since 2013 Anne has also volunteered at Walter Reed offering reiki sessions to Wounded Warriors and their families. She became a Reiki Master Teacher in 2017. Anne is thrilled to be joining the wonderful Energy Balancing Team at the Smith Center!\nAbout Margaret Haggerty\nIt is a privilege to be part of the energy balancing team for Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.\nHaving had a long and gratifying career as a registered nurse\, I bring a wide range of experiences. Before my retirement nine years ago\, I had worked for 47 years as a nurse in a variety of capacities. Whether I was taking care of a tiny two-pound NICU infant or doing diabetic teaching for a centenarian\, I realized that there was a larger Presence who was always guiding me. And I believe deeply that whatever experience of healing we receive\, involves body\, mind and spirit. I became a massage therapist and Reiki Master in order to incorporate a more deliberate approach to healing touch. It was a privilege to work with many clients who were dealing with cancer. What a joy it was to offer some hope and gentle touch as they faced many medical and emotional challenges. Now in my later years I am happy to bring the soft\, caring touch of energy balancing to help those who come to Smith Center\, to relax in order for. their bodies to mend and their spirits to heal.\nAbout Pat Spellman\n\n\nPat studied English literature and has a special interest in reading and writing poetry. She has been certified as a Reiki master and as a practitioner of reflexology and Feldenkrais movement. She is a long-time member of the Self-Realization Fellowship\, which teaches meditation methods and principles for harmonious living. After a career in publications in DC\, Pat retired in Baltimore where she continues her active interest in the Smith Center and its clients.\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team. Sylvia is a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner and a Reiki Master Teacher. For many years she has managed a Reiki Volunteer group at a seniors’ residence and has served for 6 years as a Reiki volunteer in GWU Hospital. She is delighted to now work with a dedicated and wonderful team to address the balancing of one’s subtle energies in order to allow the body to completely relax. She has an independent practice in Kensington\, MD. To learn more about Sylvia and subtle energies\, please visit her website www.sylviasturm.com.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Each Other: A Healing Circle for Muslim Sisters Living with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Gina Petonito\nFor Indeed\, with hardship comes ease\nIndeed\, with hardship comes ease.\nAl-Inshirah 94:5-6\nCancer! The word evokes fear and dread. And then the unthinkable happens. You get your diagnosis\, and just like that\, your life turns upside down. You enter a realm of tests\, procedures\, infusions\, radiation\, and operations. You are surrounded by people: caregivers\, healing professionals\, family\, and friends. Yet\, you feel all alone. Sisters\, you can find companionship on this journey. In a healing circle. The Smith Center for Healing and the Arts has graciously agreed to sponsor a healing circle just for us: Muslim Sisters. The Circle will provide a safe and accepting space\, where we can share our stories and heal together. Yes\, we are patient. But healing circles allow us to persevere. Let’s let our healing circle provide us with the ease Allah (SWT) promises and that we so richly\ndeserve.\n\nThis circle will meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 9:00-10:30am EST. Meetings will continue for 12 weeks.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n September 2 & 16\n October 7 & 21\n\n\n\n\nAbout Gina Petonito\, PhD\n\n\nGina Petonito is a retired university professor\, current business and life coach\, and a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Stage IIa\, ER/PR+ invasive ductal carcinoma in November 2021\, upgraded to Level IIIa after surgery. She underwent treatment throughout 2022 and is currently cancer free. Determined to have a productive life despite the arduous procedures\, Gina completed an 83\,000-word historical fiction manuscript\, and moved forward with her\nbusinesses Writing Your Way and Academic Womxn Reclaim Your Power.\n\nA convert to Islam since 1984\, Gina created a gratitude series for Muslim women\, titled 99 Days of Gratitude: A Practice for Sisters. This practice\, uploaded to YouTube focuses upon one of the Beautiful Names of God each day\, and suggests related supplications\, gratitude items\, and affirmations. The practice allowed her to place cancer into its proper perspective as one negative in a life of abundant blessings\, ma sha Allah. Nevertheless\, cancer often plunges a person into loneliness\, which support can alleviate. I firmly believe that together we sisters can strengthen each other in our deen and in our worldly life. Together\, we can come to terms with cancer\, be patient AND persevere.\n\nGina lives in the greater Cincinnati\, Ohio area and spends her free time at home with her beloved family. She enjoys studying history\, reading\, writing\, and connecting with women all over the globe.

Radical Writing Space is our answer to this conundrum of wanting to attend for some radical self-care\, but struggling to commit.\n \nClinical studies have documented the healing psychological and psychical impacts of writing within a safe and sacred space. On the second Friday of each month\, drop in for one hour for Radical Writing Space and join us for inspiring writing prompts\, time to write\, and time to share with one another about your experience of putting your most radical emotions\, feelings\, and experiences on paper.\n \nThe part that makes this writing so “radical” is that we create a safe space for it all — raw feelings\, emotions\, experiences — and\, together\, we give voice to them in a supportive\, nonjudgmental environment.\n\n \nThis healing program offers a place for supporting one another and we stay clear of writing critique.
