SUMMARY:The Senses\, Sensuality\, and Body Love
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered in-person. In order to participate\, please register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith Tina Scott Lassiter\n\n*collage art cannot be reproduced without permission from Tina Scott Lassiter\n\nOur body is the one thing we know better than anyone else does. We’ve been intimately engaged with it for our entire life after all\, so who else can make that claim! As we mature\, outside influences\, health issues\, and even our family lineage play a role in shaping the narratives we construct about our bodies and lives. The problem with that is\, we sometimes allow those influences to negatively affect the love we should have for our total body — physical\, mental\, spiritual\, emotional\, and social.\n\nThis workshop is designed to get in touch with the body narratives that have influenced our life progression\, consider the story we wish to tell moving forward\, and appreciate the body we have. After establishing a safe space for enlightenment and sharing\, you will gain an understanding of how the physical\, mental\, spiritual\, emotional and social bodies can be separate yet make up the whole. Using the senses\, live conversation about sensuality\, along with a fun sensual experience\, guided and art imagery\, creative and written exercises\, and some easy movement\, you will uncover and reflect on your personal body narratives. You will also be guided through an uplifting exercise on loving the body you’re gifted with\, with all it’s flaws and OMG moments\, as well as receive tips for body love self-care. While story sharing is encouraged during group discussions\, our stories are our own; you are free to make choices about what and how much is comfortable for you to share.\n\nNo matter our age\, it’s time to really wonder about who we are\, have been; who we wish to be\, where we see ourselves going or maybe even discover something we never even thought of. To celebrate our years of life\, the wisdom we’ve acquired along the way\, the body we have right now. To uncover the stories our bodies have to tell us\, the ones we know and perhaps ones unknown. To honor our beautifully exquisite body existence as together we explore how the senses\, sensuality\, and total body love can bring forth our body narrative so we can begin to write a new or continued story for the path ahead.\n\nPrevious artistic training or specific writing skills are not necessary for this session. This program is open to people who identify as women only.\n\nSuggested Donation: $15\n\n\n\n\nAbout Tina Scott Lassiter\n\nTina Scott Lassiter\, M.B.A.\, is a holistic health professional\, collagist\, photographer\, author/writer\, speaker/moderator\, and co-host of The Body Love Construct podcast. Certified in several mind-body disciplines and the healing arts\, she facilitates workshops for groups and individuals that focus on emotional\, social\, and spiritual development and health. Her collage images originally addressed self-esteem and personal body awareness; they later materialized as statement art\, dictated by current events and social issues. Both her essays and art have appeared in anthologies and on/in a number of online and printed national publications.

SUMMARY:Energy Balancing
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Balancing team continues to offer distance sessions. If you wish to receive\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith the Energy Balancing Team\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. When these energies are out of balance\, all our body systems can become askew. One key to bringing us back into balance is deep relaxation. This is just what our volunteers provide – a half-hour of stress reducing relaxation to calm the body and enhance our well-being.\n\nMost likely you are familiar with many of the body’s systems such as the respiratory system\, the digestive system\, the endocrine system\, the skeletal system and so on. But are you aware that we also have subtle energy systems\, systems that cannot be seen\, cannot be measured\, cannot be felt. Perhaps you know of some; the most familiar are the aura (also known as the biofield)\, the meridians\, the chakras.\n\nThese subtle energy systems were very familiar to the ancients. They used them regularly to bring the body into energetic balance. When the body’s energies are in balance\, we function at a higher vibration and are more relaxed\, more joyful\, more centered and able to enjoy life more productively. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nEnergy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n 1:00pm\n 2:20pm\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Energy Balancing Team\nAbout Anne Molofsky\nAnne has always been interested in promoting health and wellness. She had a forty-year career as a nutritionist\, beginning as a research nutritionist in several NIH-funded clinical trials\, then working for the federal government in policy and education\, and subsequently counselling clients in her private practice. She received her reiki training over 10 years ago and was able to offer reiki sessions to her nutrition clients as part of their treatment. Since 2013 Anne has also volunteered at Walter Reed offering reiki sessions to Wounded Warriors and their families. She became a Reiki Master Teacher in 2017. Anne is thrilled to be joining the wonderful Energy Balancing Team at the Smith Center!\nAbout Margaret Haggerty\nIt is a privilege to be part of the energy balancing team for Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.\nHaving had a long and gratifying career as a registered nurse\, I bring a wide range of experiences. Before my retirement nine years ago\, I had worked for 47 years as a nurse in a variety of capacities. Whether I was taking care of a tiny two-pound NICU infant or doing diabetic teaching for a centenarian\, I realized that there was a larger Presence who was always guiding me. And I believe deeply that whatever experience of healing we receive\, involves body\, mind and spirit. I became a massage therapist and Reiki Master in order to incorporate a more deliberate approach to healing touch. It was a privilege to work with many clients who were dealing with cancer. What a joy it was to offer some hope and gentle touch as they faced many medical and emotional challenges. Now in my later years I am happy to bring the soft\, caring touch of energy balancing to help those who come to Smith Center\, to relax in order for. their bodies to mend and their spirits to heal.\nAbout Pat Spellman\n\n\nPat studied English literature and has a special interest in reading and writing poetry. She has been certified as a Reiki master and as a practitioner of reflexology and Feldenkrais movement. She is a long-time member of the Self-Realization Fellowship\, which teaches meditation methods and principles for harmonious living. After a career in publications in DC\, Pat retired in Baltimore where she continues her active interest in the Smith Center and its clients.\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team. Sylvia is a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner and a Reiki Master Teacher. For many years she has managed a Reiki Volunteer group at a seniors’ residence and has served for 6 years as a Reiki volunteer in GWU Hospital. She is delighted to now work with a dedicated and wonderful team to address the balancing of one’s subtle energies in order to allow the body to completely relax. She has an independent practice in Kensington\, MD. To learn more about Sylvia and subtle energies\, please visit her website www.sylviasturm.com.

We will add you to our waitlist and you will be notified if any there are any cancellations. \nwith Sylvia Sturm\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nIn-Person Energy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n Time slot #1: 1:00-1:30pm ET\n Time slot #2: 1:40-2:10pm ET\n Time slot #3: 2:20-2:50pm ET\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team.

In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nArt Lab: Playing with Watercolor\nwith artist & sculptor Liz Lescault\n\nPlaying with Watercolor\n\n\nThis fall we will play with watercolor using “wet on wet” techniques to create washes and spontaneous abstract effects. We will explore the varied effects of the watercolor medium. There is just nothing like the magic of watercolor. Techniques will be introduced in an easeful way and we will discover how to let paintings emerge from our experiments.\n\nThese sessions will provide inspiration for both representational and abstract painting.\n\nSessions will start at 5:30pm and end at 7pm with extra sharing and critique time until 7:30 pm for those who wish to stay.\n\nArt Lab will be about making art as well as the different ways we experience art and how it affects us. We will explore both the process and the product of the art we create. We will integrate movement and playful sharing into our art making experience sharing insights\, joys and concerns.\n\nThese hands-on workshops are for both novices and experienced artists.  You are invited to come to one\, some or all of the workshops as the spirit moves you. All are welcome.\n\n\n\nSuggested Materials*:\n\n*your favorite watercolor supplies may work just as well for this project. Below are some tips and suggested supplies from Cheap Joes www.cheapjoes.com (my favorite place to purchase – prices are generally 40% off retail store prices and are of high quality). High quality watercolor supplies are needed to achieve many watercolor effects.\n\n Arches Watercolor Pads  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/19386/s/arches-watercolor-pad-140-lb-cold-pressed-9-x-12/)(or size of your choice)  Quality watercolor paper is essential for the best wet on wet effects and Arches is a high quality but reasonably priced paper. I recommend the pad for experimentation and the block (see below) for paintings.\n Arches Watercolor Block\, cold pressed   https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/19657/s/arches-watercolor-block-140-lb-cold-pressed-9-x-12/  (or size of your choice)   (not essential)\n Watercolor Paint (pocket box set)  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/37046/s/van-gogh-watercolor-pocket-box-sets/  (or paint of your choice) I especially recommend high quality paints.\n Watercolor Brush\, round size 8  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/40241/s/winsor-newton-professional-watercolor-synthetic-sable-brush-round-size-8/\n Watercolor pencils  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/22039/s/royal-langnickel-watercolor-pencil-essentials-keep-n-carry-set/  or any brand you prefer (optional)\n squeeze bottle   https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/30675/s/jacquard-squeeze-bottles-with-tips/\n a small plastic palette   https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/35235/s/laurin-s-multi-pan-palette/\n Pencils: standard and/or mechanical\n good quality eraser  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/17559/s/general-s-tri-tip-eraser/\n 3  small jars or containers for water 4-6 ounces is sufficient\n paper towels\n\n\n\n\n\nArt Lab will be offered monthly on Thursdays from 5:30 – 7:00pm ET. SUMMARY:Painting for Life
DESCRIPTION:10AM-12PM SESSION – This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Noelle Imparato\n\nThis workshop provides a safe and powerful learning container using community building and a “mindfulness painting” practice to foster healing\, spiritual awakening\, and personal transformation.\n\nYou are invited to work from the heart and express your drama in forms and colors. As you paint\, you process your emotions and liberate yourself from the psychological and physical disease they may cause. This is a workshop for processing feelings through painting and group sharing. It is not a good space for finishing existing projects and using other mediums.\n\nBy intentionally focusing on the emotional process rather than the artistic product\, participants are able to unleash their creative powers and produce striking works\, while by sharing their creative process they gain the insight and wisdom often hidden in works created in a state of letting go.\n\nFor more information about Painting for Life and what you can expect during a session\, please explore this manual:\nPFL MANUAL\nParticipants are encouraged to drop-in for any session and attend as many sessions as they would like.\nSession Schedule:\nThe Painting For Life workshop on Zoom consists of a 1-hour painting session framed by a 30 minute opening circle (which can often be 45 minutes) and a 30 minute closing circle.\n\nOpening Circle – In the opening circle we build a safe and powerful We-Space\ncommunity characterized by “presencing\,” sharing with honesty and integrity\, deep listening\, and resonating in harmony with each other. Noelle will start this opening circle by giving a quick prompting and end it with a 3-minute meditation before sending people off to paint for exactly 1 hour.\n\n1-hour Painting Session – Participants paint at home\, using cheap materials such as paper\, tempera paints\, watercolors\, acrylics\, or pastels\, Crayolas\, and even color pens. When the hour is over\, people take a picture of their painting and text it to Noelle before coming back to the Zoom room.\n\nClosing Circle – Noelle then shares each painting on the screen as people explore their process while the group may offer feedback and further insights get sparked. We end this closing circle with a group hugs as we shout “May all beings be happy!” thus fusing personal and collective healing together.\n\nSuggested Donation: $15\n\n\n\nAbout Noelle Imparato\n\nArmed with a PhD and her lifelong experience\, Noelle Imparato created Painting For Life\, a process art painting workshop envisioned as a tool for healing\, awakening\, and personal transformation. After 20 years of running it from her home studio in Los Angeles\, France\, Spain\, and Baltimore\, she moved to Zoom due to the pandemic. It allowed her community to grow more international with participants from Canada\, Europe\, and India. Noelle’s life experience includes training and working in architecture and film\, a Ph.D. in mythological studies with an emphasis in depth psychology\, a 30-year mindfulness meditation practice\, and a multitude of retreats especially at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur CA. She is currently writing “Painting For Life\,” a 2-volume book about her personal experience with the healing power of art\, and the method she\ndeveloped with her workshop.

SUMMARY:Caregiver Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Julia Rowland\, Ph.D.\n\n\nThis cancer caregiver support group\, led by a licensed psychologist\, is designed to provide cancer caregivers with the opportunity to meet other caregivers\, learn about useful tools for self-care\, and explore ways to thrive in the caregiving role. \n\n\n\n\nJulia’s Caregiver Support Group meets Bi-Monthly on Mondays from 6:00 – 7:30pm.\nAbout Julia Rowland\n\n\nJulia Rowland\, PhD\, who joined Smith Center in October 2017\, comes to this position as a long-time clinician\, researcher and teacher in the area of psychosocial aspects of cancer. She has worked with and conducted competitively funded research among both pediatric and adult cancer survivors and their families\, and published broadly in psycho-oncology\, including co-editing\, along with Dr. Jimmie Holland\, the ground-breaking text\, Handbook of Psychooncology.  She has also been a frequent speaker on cancer survivorship\, or life after cancer\, for both professional and lay audiences.\n\nJulia received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in psychosocial oncology. While at MSKCC\, where she held joint appointments in pediatrics and neurology\, Julia helped to develop and was the first Director of the Post-Treatment Resource Program\, one of the first non-medical survivorship care programs to be offered by a major cancer center in the U.S. In 1990 she moved with her husband and two young children to Washington\, DC to become founding Director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Georgetown University and the Lombardi Cancer Center. There she helped expand services to meet the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and families\, launched some of the first quality of life clinical trials\, and also introduced a program to enable first year medical students to learn the art of caring for those living through and beyond cancer from survivors themselves and Lombardi faculty. Nine years later\, in September of 1999\, she was recruited to the National Cancer Institute to become the first\, full-time Director of the Office of Cancer Survivorship\, a position in which she served for 18 years\, championing the growth of survivorship research and care\, before stepping down in September 2017 to assume her new role at Smith Center. Although new to the team\, Julia is no stranger to Smith Center. She knew Smith Center’s founder\, Barbara Smith Coleman\, and has volunteered her expertise across the years as a speaker\, group leader and staff member for both the 1-day and weeklong residential retreats. Julia brings to her new role a passion to translate what research has taught us about healing in the context of cancer to the broader community\, in essence\, taking the science of survivorship from the lab bench to the park bench.

Rowland\, Ph.D.\n\n\nJulia Rowland\, PhD\, who joined Smith Center in October 2017\, comes to this position as a long-time clinician\, researcher and teacher in the area of psychosocial aspects of cancer.

She says that she looks forward to the opportunity to accompany others on their journey as they deal with parent guilt and parent grief. She also looks forward to the opportunity to use Circles principles (creating safe spaces for people to share and be heard) to help facilitate this group.
