SUMMARY:Pop-Up Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith Lisa Simms Booth\n\n\nWelcome to “Pop-Up Book Club\,” a community of book lovers diving into current and relevant book material.\n\nFor our third session\, we will read Moonrise Over New Jessup by Jamila Minnicks.\n\nOn August 15th\, Lisa will lead us in a lively discussion about the book. Please join us no matter how much or little of the book you have read. Please read below for a description of the book.\n\nPop-Up Book Club will be held from 12:00-1:00pm ET.\n\n February 2 (The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times by Michelle Obama)\n June 27 (The Beauty of What Remains: How Our Greatest Fear Becomes Our Greatest Gift by Steve Ledger)\n August 15 (Moonrise Over New Jessup by Jamila Minnicks)\n November 7 (No Pressure No\, Diamond: Mining for Gifts in Illness & Loss by Teri A. Dillion) (moved from May date)\n Future sessions TBD\n\n\n\n\n“My favorite novels light up my brain with things I hadn’t considered before – and this one does exactly that. The deep complexity of the American Civil Rights movement; the various\, sometimes opposing approaches of its leaders to desegregation; the gains and inevitable casualties that social progress can claim. With compelling characters and a heart-pounding plot\, Jamila Minnicks pulled me into pages of history I’d never turned before.”―Barbara Kingsolver\, New York Times bestselling author of Demon Copperhead\n\nIt’s 1957\, and after leaving the only home she has ever known\, Alice Young steps off the bus into all-Black New Jessup\, where residents have largely rejected integration as the means for Black social advancement. Instead\, they seek to maintain\, and fortify\, the community they cherish on their “side of the woods.” In this place\, Alice falls in love with Raymond Campbell\, whose clandestine organizing activities challenge New Jessup’s longstanding status quo and could lead to the young couple’s expulsion—or worse—from the home they both hold dear. As they marry and raise children together\, Alice must find a way to balance her undying support for his underground work with her desire to protect New Jessup from the rising pressure of upheaval from inside\, and outside\, their side of town.\n\nBased on the history of the many Black towns and settlements established across the country\, Jamila Minnicks’s heartfelt and riveting debut is both a celebration of Black joy and a timely examination of the opposing viewpoints that attended desegregation in America.\nClick <HERE> to get a copy of Moonrise Over New Jessup\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lisa Simms Booth\n\n\nLisa Simms Booth comes to Smith Center following a nearly twenty-five year career in media\, politics and advocacy. Lisa has always had a servant’s heart and has aspired to do work that improves the lives of others or empowers them to advocate for positive change. She has previously worked at LISTEN\, Inc.\, The Alliance for Justice\, Time Dollar Institute\, Children’s Defense Fund\, Democratic National Committee and the National Rainbow Coalition.\n\nIn 2003\, Lisa started working at FasterCures\, a center of the Milken Institute\, which focuses on the systemic barriers to faster discovery of better treatments and cures for diseases including cancer. At the same time of getting this new job\, Lisa’s mother Lucille was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.\n\nThroughout her 14-year tenure at FasterCures in various leadership roles in partnership development\, external affairs\, and operations\, she created programs that brought together pharmaceutical\, biotech\, philanthropic\, and non-profit communities with the aim to make the system work better for patients. While working at FasterCures\, Lisa was also living the roller coaster ride of treatment and remission with her mom which had a profound impact on her. Her mom’s eight-year journey and passing led to Lisa’s passion for cancer advocacy and she dedicates her work with patients to her mom with the hope that she can make this journey better for patients and their families.\n\nThis dedication served her well in her role as Senior Director of Patient and Public Engagement at the Biden Cancer Initiative\, where she worked prior to joining Smith Center. At BCI\, she helped define the organization’s advocacy outreach and collaboration strategies. She also led the design and coordination of the Biden Cancer Collaborative\, which mobilized the cancer patient and advocacy community around key priorities\, promoting\, and sharing tried and tested approaches to addressing common problems. In addition\, Lisa served as the staff lead for BCI’s Patient Navigation Working Group which was focused on exploring ways to make patient navigation more accessible to cancer patients.\n\nShe is a Pittsburgh native and a graduate of Michigan State University. Lisa lives in Silver Spring with her husband Bryan and their beloved dog\, Taz. She’s an avid sports fan and loves music\, going to the theater\, and spending time with friends. She is active in the music ministry and community outreach efforts for her church\, Metropolitan AME.

SUMMARY:Healing Circle for Young Adults with Metastatic Breast Cancer
DESCRIPTION:In order to participate\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nwith Becky Bindrim & Samara Spence\n\nWe are a demand-driven and patient-led in-person and online community support group for young women and men (diagnosed between the age of 18 – 45ish) with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) in the DC\, MD\, and VA area. We have created this group as a means of providing both a safe community support space for people with MBC\, as well as peer-led and expert-led information on living with breast cancer. This group is new and independent of any established breast cancer organization\, though we are are in complete gratitude to the Smith Center for hosting us.\n\n\n\nWe facilitate our group in a democratic and participatory manner; in essence\, our group is your group! Interested new members\, kindly contact programs@smithcenter.org for an informal intake before coming to your first meeting.\n\nThe group meetings alternate between the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 8-9pm ET and the 2nd Saturday of the month from 10-11am ET. The group alternates between meeting in-person and online. \n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n ON ZOOM – Wednesday\, August 16 (8-9pm ET)\n IN-PERSON – Saturday\, September 16 (10-11am ET)\n ON ZOOM – Wednesday\, October 18 (8-9pm ET)\n IN-PERSON – Saturday\, November 17 (10-11am ET)\n ON ZOOM – Wednesday\, December 20 (8-9pm ET)\n\n\n\n\nAbout Becky Bindrim\n\nMy name is Becky. I am a mother (of 2)\, wife\, daughter\, sister (to 3)\, friend\, and thriver. I was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) at the age of 34 while nursing my then 14-month-old daughter. In those first few weeks I felt every single emotion there was to feel… scared\, confused\, grateful for another day. My oncologist at the time had referred me to the Young Adults with MBC support group at the Smith Center and it brought comfort. My concerns were validated\, my anxiety eased\, I felt “seen” by everyone who is walking this path with me. I was no longer alone\, I was hopeful. \nI am excited to co-facilitate this group and help bring comfort and support to every young adult living with this disease. This population faces unique challenges; some of us have young children\, others never got the opportunity to have kids\, some are trying to manage side effects while working full-time\, others have quit their job and pursued their true passion. We have created a beautiful community and welcome those recently diagnosed and those who have been thriving for years. \n\nAbout Samara Spence\n\nMy name is Samara. I live in Washington\, DC\, with my husband and 2 cats. I moved to DC in 2014 to work in the government as an attorney\, and I’m still a lawyer in my professional life. I was diagnosed with MBC at age 40 after finding a lump in my own breast. Since then\, my world has been turned upside down. I’ve had to learn new skills\, new boundaries\, and an entirely new language — I joke that I’m working on the unofficial graduate degree I never wanted in breast cancer oncology. The Young Adults with MBC group has been a silver lining for me. These amazing young people are knowledgeable\, helpful\, honest\, and\, above all\, give me hope. I’m honored to co-facilitate this group with Becky.

SUMMARY:Energy Balancing
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Balancing team continues to offer distance sessions. If you wish to receive\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith the Energy Balancing Team\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. When these energies are out of balance\, all our body systems can become askew. One key to bringing us back into balance is deep relaxation. This is just what our volunteers provide – a half-hour of stress reducing relaxation to calm the body and enhance our well-being.\n\nMost likely you are familiar with many of the body’s systems such as the respiratory system\, the digestive system\, the endocrine system\, the skeletal system and so on. But are you aware that we also have subtle energy systems\, systems that cannot be seen\, cannot be measured\, cannot be felt. Perhaps you know of some; the most familiar are the aura (also known as the biofield)\, the meridians\, the chakras.\n\nThese subtle energy systems were very familiar to the ancients. They used them regularly to bring the body into energetic balance. When the body’s energies are in balance\, we function at a higher vibration and are more relaxed\, more joyful\, more centered and able to enjoy life more productively. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nEnergy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n 1:00pm\n 2:20pm\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Energy Balancing Team\nAbout Anne Molofsky\nAnne has always been interested in promoting health and wellness. She had a forty-year career as a nutritionist\, beginning as a research nutritionist in several NIH-funded clinical trials\, then working for the federal government in policy and education\, and subsequently counselling clients in her private practice. She received her reiki training over 10 years ago and was able to offer reiki sessions to her nutrition clients as part of their treatment. Since 2013 Anne has also volunteered at Walter Reed offering reiki sessions to Wounded Warriors and their families. She became a Reiki Master Teacher in 2017. Anne is thrilled to be joining the wonderful Energy Balancing Team at the Smith Center!\nAbout Margaret Haggerty\nIt is a privilege to be part of the energy balancing team for Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.\nHaving had a long and gratifying career as a registered nurse\, I bring a wide range of experiences. Before my retirement nine years ago\, I had worked for 47 years as a nurse in a variety of capacities. Whether I was taking care of a tiny two-pound NICU infant or doing diabetic teaching for a centenarian\, I realized that there was a larger Presence who was always guiding me. And I believe deeply that whatever experience of healing we receive\, involves body\, mind and spirit. I became a massage therapist and Reiki Master in order to incorporate a more deliberate approach to healing touch. It was a privilege to work with many clients who were dealing with cancer. What a joy it was to offer some hope and gentle touch as they faced many medical and emotional challenges. Now in my later years I am happy to bring the soft\, caring touch of energy balancing to help those who come to Smith Center\, to relax in order for. their bodies to mend and their spirits to heal.\nAbout Pat Spellman\n\n\nPat studied English literature and has a special interest in reading and writing poetry. She has been certified as a Reiki master and as a practitioner of reflexology and Feldenkrais movement. She is a long-time member of the Self-Realization Fellowship\, which teaches meditation methods and principles for harmonious living. After a career in publications in DC\, Pat retired in Baltimore where she continues her active interest in the Smith Center and its clients.\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team. Sylvia is a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner and a Reiki Master Teacher. For many years she has managed a Reiki Volunteer group at a seniors’ residence and has served for 6 years as a Reiki volunteer in GWU Hospital. She is delighted to now work with a dedicated and wonderful team to address the balancing of one’s subtle energies in order to allow the body to completely relax. She has an independent practice in Kensington\, MD. To learn more about Sylvia and subtle energies\, please visit her website www.sylviasturm.com.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Each Other: A Healing Circle for Muslim Sisters Living with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Gina Petonito\nFor Indeed\, with hardship comes ease\nIndeed\, with hardship comes ease.\nAl-Inshirah 94:5-6\nCancer! The word evokes fear and dread. And then the unthinkable happens. You get your diagnosis\, and just like that\, your life turns upside down. You enter a realm of tests\, procedures\, infusions\, radiation\, and operations. You are surrounded by people: caregivers\, healing professionals\, family\, and friends. Yet\, you feel all alone. Sisters\, you can find companionship on this journey. In a healing circle. The Smith Center for Healing and the Arts has graciously agreed to sponsor a healing circle just for us: Muslim Sisters. The Circle will provide a safe and accepting space\, where we can share our stories and heal together. Yes\, we are patient. But healing circles allow us to persevere. Let’s let our healing circle provide us with the ease Allah (SWT) promises and that we so richly\ndeserve.\n\nThis circle will meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Meetings will continue for 12 weeks.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n August 19\n September 2 & 16\n October 7 & 21\n\n\n\n\nAbout Gina Petonito\, PhD\n\n\nGina Petonito is a retired university professor\, current business and life coach\, and a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Stage IIa\, ER/PR+ invasive ductal carcinoma in November 2021\, upgraded to Level IIIa after surgery. She underwent treatment throughout 2022 and is currently cancer free. Determined to have a productive life despite the arduous procedures\, Gina completed an 83\,000-word historical fiction manuscript\, and moved forward with her\nbusinesses Writing Your Way and Academic Womxn Reclaim Your Power.\n\nA convert to Islam since 1984\, Gina created a gratitude series for Muslim women\, titled 99 Days of Gratitude: A Practice for Sisters. This practice\, uploaded to YouTube focuses upon one of the Beautiful Names of God each day\, and suggests related supplications\, gratitude items\, and affirmations. The practice allowed her to place cancer into its proper perspective as one negative in a life of abundant blessings\, ma sha Allah. Nevertheless\, cancer often plunges a person into loneliness\, which support can alleviate. I firmly believe that together we sisters can strengthen each other in our deen and in our worldly life. Together\, we can come to terms with cancer\, be patient AND persevere.\n\nGina lives in the greater Cincinnati\, Ohio area and spends her free time at home with her beloved family. She enjoys studying history\, reading\, writing\, and connecting with women all over the globe.

In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing olivia@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Linda Seabright\nin partnership with Tigerlily Foundation\n*Please note that by registering for this program\, you consent to have your name and email shared with Tigerlily Foundation. Tigerlily only collects this information for data purposes and it will not be shared with any other parties.\n\n\nMindfulness is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as it was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Ph.D.\n\nDr. Kabat-Zinn and his program were featured prominently in the award-winning PBS television series Healing and the Mind. The profound effects of this work have begun to be strongly supported by a large body of scientific research.\n\nSpecifically\, mindfulness helps you access the ability to be non-judgmental\, compassionate\, patient\, present and aware. You wouldn’t have come this far if these qualities did not exist in you somewhere. Possible benefits may be a greater sense of peace and well-being.\n\nWe will take a few moments to check into how we’re feeling in the beginning of the meditation and afterward. We’ll sit or lie comfortably and go through a slightly different guided meditation each week. No experience needed.\nBeing Together Mindfulness meets bi-weekly on Mondays from 12:00pm – 12:30pm ET.\n\nSuggested Donation: $5/session\n\n\n\n\nAbout Linda Seabright\n\n\n Linda Seabright has been teaching Mindfulness and Meditation since she completed her training in MBSR\, or Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction\, at the University of California\, San Diego\, School of Medicine in 2016. Linda is a life-long practitioner of yoga\, a cancer survivor\, and has studied expressive art therapy since 2010. Her passion  for artistic and musical expression have inspired her to bring the same dedication to her meditation teachings\, bringing a wide array of experience to her practice. She also teaches trauma-based meditation to nonprofits and has developed a series of meditations to help bring peace and balance into people’s lives. More information at www.jazzmeditation.com.

SUMMARY:Caregiver Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Julia Rowland\, Ph.D.\n\n\nThis cancer caregiver support group\, led by a licensed psychologist\, is designed to provide cancer caregivers with the opportunity to meet other caregivers\, learn about useful tools for self-care\, and explore ways to thrive in the caregiving role. \n\n\n\n\nJulia’s Caregiver Support Group meets Bi-Monthly on Mondays from 6:00 – 7:30pm.\nAbout Julia Rowland\n\n\nJulia Rowland\, PhD\, who joined Smith Center in October 2017\, comes to this position as a long-time clinician\, researcher and teacher in the area of psychosocial aspects of cancer. She has worked with and conducted competitively funded research among both pediatric and adult cancer survivors and their families\, and published broadly in psycho-oncology\, including co-editing\, along with Dr. Jimmie Holland\, the ground-breaking text\, Handbook of Psychooncology.  She has also been a frequent speaker on cancer survivorship\, or life after cancer\, for both professional and lay audiences.\n\nJulia received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in psychosocial oncology. While at MSKCC\, where she held joint appointments in pediatrics and neurology\, Julia helped to develop and was the first Director of the Post-Treatment Resource Program\, one of the first non-medical survivorship care programs to be offered by a major cancer center in the U.S. In 1990 she moved with her husband and two young children to Washington\, DC to become founding Director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Georgetown University and the Lombardi Cancer Center. There she helped expand services to meet the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and families\, launched some of the first quality of life clinical trials\, and also introduced a program to enable first year medical students to learn the art of caring for those living through and beyond cancer from survivors themselves and Lombardi faculty. Nine years later\, in September of 1999\, she was recruited to the National Cancer Institute to become the first\, full-time Director of the Office of Cancer Survivorship\, a position in which she served for 18 years\, championing the growth of survivorship research and care\, before stepping down in September 2017 to assume her new role at Smith Center. Although new to the team\, Julia is no stranger to Smith Center. She knew Smith Center’s founder\, Barbara Smith Coleman\, and has volunteered her expertise across the years as a speaker\, group leader and staff member for both the 1-day and weeklong residential retreats. Julia brings to her new role a passion to translate what research has taught us about healing in the context of cancer to the broader community\, in essence\, taking the science of survivorship from the lab bench to the park bench.

She has been leading yoga classes in the DC area since 2007 after completing her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Nth Degree Yoga with Martha Rosen. In 2011\, she went back to earn her RYT500.
