Rowland\, Ph.D.\n\n\nJulia Rowland\, PhD\, who joined Smith Center in October 2017\, comes to this position as a long-time clinician\, researcher and teacher in the area of psychosocial aspects of cancer. She has worked with and conducted competitively funded research among both pediatric and adult cancer survivors and their families\, and published broadly in psycho-oncology\, including co-editing\, along with Dr. Jimmie Holland\, the ground-breaking text\, Handbook of Psychooncology.  She has also been a frequent speaker on cancer survivorship\, or life after cancer\, for both professional and lay audiences.\n\nJulia received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in psychosocial oncology. While at MSKCC\, where she held joint appointments in pediatrics and neurology\, Julia helped to develop and was the first Director of the Post-Treatment Resource Program\, one of the first non-medical survivorship care programs to be offered by a major cancer center in the U.S. In 1990 she moved with her husband and two young children to Washington\, DC to become founding Director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Georgetown University and the Lombardi Cancer Center. There she helped expand services to meet the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and families\, launched some of the first quality of life clinical trials\, and also introduced a program to enable first year medical students to learn the art of caring for those living through and beyond cancer from survivors themselves and Lombardi faculty. Nine years later\, in September of 1999\, she was recruited to the National Cancer Institute to become the first\, full-time Director of the Office of Cancer Survivorship\, a position in which she served for 18 years\, championing the growth of survivorship research and care\, before stepping down in September 2017 to assume her new role at Smith Center. Although new to the team\, Julia is no stranger to Smith Center. She knew Smith Center’s founder\, Barbara Smith Coleman\, and has volunteered her expertise across the years as a speaker\, group leader and staff member for both the 1-day and weeklong residential retreats. Julia brings to her new role a passion to translate what research has taught us about healing in the context of cancer to the broader community\, in essence\, taking the science of survivorship from the lab bench to the park bench.

As this is a peer led support group the co-facilitators can best support parents who have children from 0-18 years old.\n\nThis group is not about giving advice (although facilitators will share resources after group and encourage this type of sharing outside of group). Instead it is about sharing our stories (the heart ache that comes from parenting with cancer) without judgment and listening with love. There will also be periodic in-person playdates for parents\, partners and their kids in the DMV.\n\n\n\nWhat is a Healing Circle?\n\nHealing Circles bring together small numbers of people impacted by a condition or circumstance to share experiences and harvest collective wisdom.  Healing Circles is a peer-led process by which people support each other through deep listening and shared learning. When working at its best\, this collaborative conversation model leads to authentic and deep connectivity and can create wisdom and healing for participants.\n\nThe Healing Circle for Parents with Cancer meets Monthly on the 4th Tuesday of each month (beginning September 2023) from 1:30-2:30pm ET.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n September 26\n October 24\n November 28\n December 19 (due to the holiday)\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jamie Halverson\n\n\nJamie Halverson is a mom of an energetic toddler boy and a sweet baby girl. She says that she looks forward to the opportunity to accompany others on their journey as they deal with parent guilt and parent grief. She also looks forward to the opportunity to use Circles principles (creating safe spaces for people to share and be heard) to help facilitate this group. SUMMARY:Energy Balancing
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Balancing team continues to offer distance sessions. If you wish to receive\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith the Energy Balancing Team\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. When these energies are out of balance\, all our body systems can become askew. One key to bringing us back into balance is deep relaxation. This is just what our volunteers provide – a half-hour of stress reducing relaxation to calm the body and enhance our well-being.\n\nMost likely you are familiar with many of the body’s systems such as the respiratory system\, the digestive system\, the endocrine system\, the skeletal system and so on. But are you aware that we also have subtle energy systems\, systems that cannot be seen\, cannot be measured\, cannot be felt. Perhaps you know of some; the most familiar are the aura (also known as the biofield)\, the meridians\, the chakras.\n\nThese subtle energy systems were very familiar to the ancients. They used them regularly to bring the body into energetic balance. When the body’s energies are in balance\, we function at a higher vibration and are more relaxed\, more joyful\, more centered and able to enjoy life more productively. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nEnergy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n 1:00pm\n 2:20pm\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Energy Balancing Team\nAbout Anne Molofsky\nAnne has always been interested in promoting health and wellness. She had a forty-year career as a nutritionist\, beginning as a research nutritionist in several NIH-funded clinical trials\, then working for the federal government in policy and education\, and subsequently counselling clients in her private practice. She received her reiki training over 10 years ago and was able to offer reiki sessions to her nutrition clients as part of their treatment. Since 2013 Anne has also volunteered at Walter Reed offering reiki sessions to Wounded Warriors and their families. She became a Reiki Master Teacher in 2017. Anne is thrilled to be joining the wonderful Energy Balancing Team at the Smith Center!\nAbout Margaret Haggerty\nIt is a privilege to be part of the energy balancing team for Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.\nHaving had a long and gratifying career as a registered nurse\, I bring a wide range of experiences. Before my retirement nine years ago\, I had worked for 47 years as a nurse in a variety of capacities. Whether I was taking care of a tiny two-pound NICU infant or doing diabetic teaching for a centenarian\, I realized that there was a larger Presence who was always guiding me. And I believe deeply that whatever experience of healing we receive\, involves body\, mind and spirit. I became a massage therapist and Reiki Master in order to incorporate a more deliberate approach to healing touch. It was a privilege to work with many clients who were dealing with cancer. What a joy it was to offer some hope and gentle touch as they faced many medical and emotional challenges. Now in my later years I am happy to bring the soft\, caring touch of energy balancing to help those who come to Smith Center\, to relax in order for. their bodies to mend and their spirits to heal.\nAbout Pat Spellman\n\n\nPat studied English literature and has a special interest in reading and writing poetry. She has been certified as a Reiki master and as a practitioner of reflexology and Feldenkrais movement. She is a long-time member of the Self-Realization Fellowship\, which teaches meditation methods and principles for harmonious living. After a career in publications in DC\, Pat retired in Baltimore where she continues her active interest in the Smith Center and its clients.\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team. Sylvia is a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner and a Reiki Master Teacher. For many years she has managed a Reiki Volunteer group at a seniors’ residence and has served for 6 years as a Reiki volunteer in GWU Hospital. She is delighted to now work with a dedicated and wonderful team to address the balancing of one’s subtle energies in order to allow the body to completely relax. She has an independent practice in Kensington\, MD. To learn more about Sylvia and subtle energies\, please visit her website www.sylviasturm.com.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Companioning
DESCRIPTION:Please email Olivia at programs@smithcenter.org for further information about the program.\nwith Carole O’Toole\n\nCancer often initiates an intense transformational process that can raise more questions than answers\, leading us to re-examine our beliefs and approach to life. We may feel called to explore opportunities for spiritual growth\, feeling a desire to connect with the sacred in a more conscious way and define more deeply life’s meaning in the face of cancer.\n\nRegardless of your personal beliefs or faith system\, working with a spiritual companion offers you an opportunity to reflect with another on what is going on for you spiritually\, and explore how to integrate your cancer experience with your personal beliefs.\n\nSpiritual Companions:\n\n \nProvide a safe\, trusting environment that invites stillness and reflection.\n\n \nSupport your spiritual growth and exploration\, your unique and personal journey.\n\n \nListen\, deeply and with compassion\, honoring your sacred story. This deep listening helps you to connect with your most authentic self and illuminate your unique spiritual path.\nSuggested Donation: $15\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Carole O’Toole\n\nCarole has served in many roles at Smith Center since 2006\, including Director of Residential and Virtual Retreats\, Director of the Institute of Integrative Oncology Navigation\, Co-Director and Co-Creator of Smith Center’s Integrative Navigation Training Program\, and as a member of and mentor for our integrative navigation team. Most recently\, Carole\, a survivor of an advanced cancer since 1994\,  felt called to companion others in exploring how illness offers opportunities for spiritual growth. In 2021\, Carole completed her training in Spiritual Direction from The Haden Institute\, with a particular focus on grief and loss and the spiritual challenges of living with cancer. She offers spiritual companioning services through the Smith Center and in her local community: www.cohealing.net.\n\n“Your soul already knows the way to wholeness and healing\, but often speaks to us in a small\, still voice. In our time together\, we create a nest for your soul to rest awhile\, allowing space for your sacred truth to be revealed.”\nCarole invites you to explore with her how to make meaning of your cancer experience and to look for where the holy is in your life. SUMMARY:Painting for Life
DESCRIPTION:10AM-12PM SESSION – This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Noelle Imparato\n\nThis workshop provides a safe and powerful learning container using community building and a “mindfulness painting” practice to foster healing\, spiritual awakening\, and personal transformation.\n\nYou are invited to work from the heart and express your drama in forms and colors. As you paint\, you process your emotions and liberate yourself from the psychological and physical disease they may cause. This is a workshop for processing feelings through painting and group sharing. It is not a good space for finishing existing projects and using other mediums.\n\nBy intentionally focusing on the emotional process rather than the artistic product\, participants are able to unleash their creative powers and produce striking works\, while by sharing their creative process they gain the insight and wisdom often hidden in works created in a state of letting go.\n\nFor more information about Painting for Life and what you can expect during a session\, please explore this manual:\nPFL MANUAL\nParticipants are encouraged to drop-in for any session and attend as many sessions as they would like.\nSession Schedule:\nThe Painting For Life workshop on Zoom consists of a 1-hour painting session framed by a 30 minute opening circle (which can often be 45 minutes) and a 30 minute closing circle.\n\nOpening Circle – In the opening circle we build a safe and powerful We-Space\ncommunity characterized by “presencing\,” sharing with honesty and integrity\, deep listening\, and resonating in harmony with each other. Noelle will start this opening circle by giving a quick prompting and end it with a 3-minute meditation before sending people off to paint for exactly 1 hour.\n\n1-hour Painting Session – Participants paint at home\, using cheap materials such as paper\, tempera paints\, watercolors\, acrylics\, or pastels\, Crayolas\, and even color pens. When the hour is over\, people take a picture of their painting and text it to Noelle before coming back to the Zoom room.\n\nClosing Circle – Noelle then shares each painting on the screen as people explore their process while the group may offer feedback and further insights get sparked. We end this closing circle with a group hugs as we shout “May all beings be happy!” thus fusing personal and collective healing together.\n\nSuggested Donation: $15\n\n\n\nAbout Noelle Imparato\n\nArmed with a PhD and her lifelong experience\, Noelle Imparato created Painting For Life\, a process art painting workshop envisioned as a tool for healing\, awakening\, and personal transformation. After 20 years of running it from her home studio in Los Angeles\, France\, Spain\, and Baltimore\, she moved to Zoom due to the pandemic. It allowed her community to grow more international with participants from Canada\, Europe\, and India. Noelle’s life experience includes training and working in architecture and film\, a Ph.D. in mythological studies with an emphasis in depth psychology\, a 30-year mindfulness meditation practice\, and a multitude of retreats especially at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur CA. She is currently writing “Painting For Life\,” a 2-volume book about her personal experience with the healing power of art\, and the method she\ndeveloped with her workshop.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Journaling
DESCRIPTION:Part 1/4. This program series is being offered virtually through Zoom. If you would like to join the series\, click the RSVP button above or  email programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith John Casey\n\nIn Sustainable Journaling\, simple strategies help you create a daily journaling practice that can be sustained over time.\n \nWe will concentrate more on the practice of journaling than on the content and intention behind it. As a result\, we can approach journaling less as a means to an end and more as an end in itself. You will be supported in creating a sustainable and fulfilling practice. You can either maintain the practice on its own or incorporate other journaling strategies.\n \nTopics discussed will include:\n\n Easy strategies for starting and maintaining a journal\n The advantages of creating a daily habit of journaling\n The benefits of both the practice and the product\n Overcoming obstacles to creating a daily practice \n Privacy concerns\n How to start your journal at any point in the past\n Continuing your practice if/when you miss a day\n Creating a structured yet adaptable practice\, while considering your lifestyle and preferences\n\n\n \nEach session incorporates presentations as well as opportunities for group sharing that addresses different learning and engagement styles. Additionally\, homework assignments easily accommodate participants with busy schedules.\n\n\n\nSustainable Journaling will be offered as a four-part workshop on the following dates: \n\n Sundays\, October 1\, 8\, 15\, 22\, 10-11:15 AM ET\n\nParticipants are encouraged to attend all four workshop sessions to get the most out of the Sustainable Journaling process. By registering above\, you will be registered for all four sessions. Please let us know in advance if you will not be able to attend all four sessions.\nParticipants who joined in our previous series are welcome back as space is available. Please email Kiersten at kiersten@smithcenter.org to inquire about space.\n\nSuggested Donation: $25 (4-part series)\n\n\n\nAbout John Casey\n\n\nJohn Casey works as a barber in Brooklyn\, NY. This trade affords him the opportunity to meet and talk with many different people on a daily basis. Learning that many of his customers shared his interest in keeping a journal but didn’t know how to start or to maintain one\, he decided to create a workshop that would allow him to share what he’d learned about this rewarding practice.\nIn his free time\, John loves being in his car and is grateful for any opportunity he gets to drive through to the Hudson Valley where he grew up. He has a BFA in Painting and enjoys drawing\, painting and visiting art museums. His favorite conversation topics are music\, film and anything pertaining to behavioral psychology.\n\n\nhttps://www.sustainablejournaling.com/

The profound effects of this work have begun to be strongly supported by a large body of scientific research.\n\nSpecifically\, mindfulness helps you access the ability to be non-judgmental\, compassionate\, patient\, present and aware. You wouldn’t have come this far if these qualities did not exist in you somewhere. Possible benefits may be a greater sense of peace and well-being.\n\nWe will take a few moments to check into how we’re feeling in the beginning of the meditation and afterward. We’ll sit or lie comfortably and go through a slightly different guided meditation each week. No experience needed.\nBeing Together Mindfulness meets bi-weekly on Mondays from 12:00pm – 12:30pm ET.\n\nSuggested Donation: $5/session\n\n\n\n\nAbout Linda Seabright\n\n\n Linda Seabright has been teaching Mindfulness and Meditation since she completed her training in MBSR\, or Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction\, at the University of California\, San Diego\, School of Medicine in 2016. DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Julia Rowland\, Ph.D.\n\n\nThis cancer caregiver support group\, led by a licensed psychologist\, is designed to provide cancer caregivers with the opportunity to meet other caregivers\, learn about useful tools for self-care\, and explore ways to thrive in the caregiving role. \n\n\n\n\nJulia’s Caregiver Support Group meets Bi-Monthly on Mondays from 6:00 – 7:30pm.\nAbout Julia Rowland\n\n\nJulia Rowland\, PhD\, who joined Smith Center in October 2017\, comes to this position as a long-time clinician\, researcher and teacher in the area of psychosocial aspects of cancer.

Fifteen years and thousands of layers of release later\, yoga continues to teach her how to make strategic\, creative\, and life-nourishing choices. Trained as an integrative yoga therapist\, Yael’s classes blend active with receptive states of being\, and are both insightful and lighthearted. Off the mat\, she is a coach\, writer and energy therapist. Since 2005\, Yael has taught yoga classes at area hospitals\, libraries\, workplaces\, schools\, and yoga studios. As an integrative yoga therapist (E-RYT500) she facilitates both group and individual yoga therapy sessions\, working with people dealing with a variety of conditions including cancer\, digestive disorders\, diabetes\, eating disorders\, fibromyalgia\, hypertension\, mental health challenges (including depression\, anxiety\, grief and trauma)\, rheumatoid arthritis\, scoliosis\, and sports injuries. She currently teaches a weekly therapeutic class for people living with cancer and their caregivers on GW’s campus. More info: www.yaelflusberg.com
