SUMMARY:Stitched Together
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Denise Feldman\n\nStitched Together\nWe’re all part of the same cloth… \n\nJoin us for a Stitching Circle! Denise Feldman\, a local mixed-media artist and cancer thriver\, hosts this monthly gathering in (virtual) community as we talk and stitch—a powerful meditative and healing practice. Gathering as many have done for centuries\, Denise will share tips and ideas for using needle and thread to bring joy and creativity to our everyday lives. Use her ideas to jump start your own\, or bring your favorite hand work projects and join us for community stitching time!\n \nThis community stitching circle is for you! For example\, maybe you’ve been hand sewing for years; you might be interested in exploring the recent revival of the “slow-stitch” movement; maybe you are are a needle pointer with a project to finish. Or\, you might simply enjoy the meditative nature of hand making with needle and thread.\n \nYou may consider bringing:\n\n needles and thread\,\n an old pair of jeans or other clothing that was headed to charity\,\n left over fabric from another project\,\n or simply bring yourself for some (virtual) time in community.\n\n\n\n\n\nStitched Together will be offered Monthly on Saturdays 10:00 – 11:30am ET. \n\nUpcoming Dates: \n\n July 8\n\nSuggested Donation: $10\n\n\n\nAbout Denise Feldman\nDenise Feldman is a local mixed media artist who discovered the power of creativity as a healing practice after her treatment for breast cancer in 2014. As a creative ‘dabbler’ who loves working with various materials and surfaces\, Denise shares her mixed media processes and soulful perspective with the hope of inspiring others to tell their stories ‘on and off the page’ and clear space for life’s chapters yet to come.\n\n“My philosophy is simply that telling our stories helps us heal by giving us the space to process our own experiences and connect with each other. Getting our stories out from our hearts and our heads helps make room for the next chapter to happen…the one just waiting there in the wings.” ~Denise

SUMMARY:Radical Writing Space
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Mindy Brodsky\, LCSWA and Kiersten Gallagher\n\nWherever you are on life’s journey\, there are times when it can feel impossible to commit to a recurring program like a workshop series. Radical Writing Space is our answer to this conundrum of wanting to attend for some radical self-care\, but struggling to commit.\n \nClinical studies have documented the healing psychological and psychical impacts of writing within a safe and sacred space. On the second Friday of each month\, drop in for one hour for Radical Writing Space and join us for inspiring writing prompts\, time to write\, and time to share with one another about your experience of putting your most radical emotions\, feelings\, and experiences on paper.\n \nThe part that makes this writing so “radical” is that we create a safe space for it all — raw feelings\, emotions\, experiences — and\, together\, we give voice to them in a supportive\, nonjudgmental environment.\n\n \nThis healing program offers a place for supporting one another and we stay clear of writing critique. Come and experience writing and sharing together.\n\n\n\nRadical Writing Space will be hosted Monthly on the 2nd Friday from 11am – 12:30pm ET. No previous writing experience necessary. Drop-ins welcome!\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mindy Brodsky\, LCSWA\n\nMindy Brodsky specializes in trauma-informed\, strengths-based counseling with a passion for integrative health and healing. Mindy honors her clients as the experts of their lives\, and she strives to provide a supportive and safe environment.\n\nAfter a career in social justice advocacy and her own challenging health journey\, Mindy aspires to meet her clients where they are to help them achieve their goals.\n\n\n\nAbout Kiersten Gallagher\n\n\nKiersten has served as the Cancer Support Program Director for Smith Center since 2014. Before coming to Smith Center\, she had the privilege to serve individuals and families living with cancer at Wellness House of Annapolis. Kiersten aims to offer programs to reduce stress and help participants to see the world we live in from different perspectives.
She thoroughly enjoys teaching yoga and creativity classes at Smith Center and encourages gentle movement and creativity in the healing process. Kiersten is a certified yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance and also has her YCAT (Yoga Therapy in Cancer and Chronic Illness) Professional Certification through the Integral Yoga Academy. She has completed Patient Navigation training through Smith Center’s Institute for Integrative Oncology Navigation and has also completed the Commonweal Healing Circles: Advanced Cancer Support Training. Kiersten has also completed the Compassion Cultivation Training – CCT™ an 8-week program\, developed at Stanford University\, with insights and techniques from psychology\, neuroscience\, and contemplative practice.
\n\nSuggested Donation: $10\n\n\n\nAbout Denise Feldman\nDenise Feldman is a local mixed media artist who discovered the power of creativity as a healing practice after her treatment for breast cancer in 2014.

SUMMARY:Variations of You: The Expressive Self-Portrait
DESCRIPTION:This program series is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Eileen Powers\, MFA\n\nFor as long long as there have been artists and makers\, there has been the creation of the self-portrait.\nWhether it’s realist\, abstract or performative\, the act of situating and picturing the self often springboards the artist to self-awareness and insight. This interactive\, program focuses on the many ways we can use creative and expressive activity as a stepping stone to reclaim our identity and balance.\nThe program opens with a short talk about the medium and the context of self-portraiture\, followed by exercises using simple materials. We will employ the language of color\, collage\, pen\, pencil and photography to help us explore our internal and external selves. Participants are encouraged to investigate class concepts through a take-home assignment that will be discussed in the second session.\nThe program is open to all levels and all experiences. Participants should bring pens\, pencils\, paper\, markers or any materials of their choice to participate in exercises\, and a willingness to share their experiences.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Eileen Powers\, MFA\n\n\nEileen Powers is a Cape Cod-based photographer\, designer and self-portrait artist whose Can you make hair for me? collaborative art project has been featured in exhibitions\, podcasts and news media around the country as well as in The Boston Globe. A forthcoming book about the project is currently in the works. She has a MFA in visual arts\, and is on staff at the Photographic Resource Center in Cambridge\, MA. She has led workshops at the Griffin Museum of Photography\, Creighton University and the Nantucket Atheneum among others. A video about Eileen and Can you make hair for me? can be viewed here.

\n\nSuggested Donation: $10\n\n\n\nAbout Denise Feldman\nDenise Feldman is a local mixed media artist who discovered the power of creativity as a healing practice after her treatment for breast cancer in 2014.

In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nArt Lab: Playing with Watercolor\nwith artist & sculptor Liz Lescault\n\nPlaying with Watercolor\n\n\nThis fall we will play with watercolor using “wet on wet” techniques to create washes and spontaneous abstract effects. We will explore the varied effects of the watercolor medium. There is just nothing like the magic of watercolor. Techniques will be introduced in an easeful way and we will discover how to let paintings emerge from our experiments.\n\nThese sessions will provide inspiration for both representational and abstract painting.\n\nSessions will start at 5:30pm and end at 7pm with extra sharing and critique time until 7:30 pm for those who wish to stay.\n\nArt Lab will be about making art as well as the different ways we experience art and how it affects us. We will explore both the process and the product of the art we create. We will integrate movement and playful sharing into our art making experience sharing insights\, joys and concerns.\n\nThese hands-on workshops are for both novices and experienced artists.  You are invited to come to one\, some or all of the workshops as the spirit moves you. All are welcome.\n\n\n\nSuggested Materials*:\n\n*your favorite watercolor supplies may work just as well for this project. Below are some tips and suggested supplies from Cheap Joes www.cheapjoes.com (my favorite place to purchase – prices are generally 40% off retail store prices and are of high quality). High quality watercolor supplies are needed to achieve many watercolor effects.\n\n Arches Watercolor Pads  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/19386/s/arches-watercolor-pad-140-lb-cold-pressed-9-x-12/)(or size of your choice)  Quality watercolor paper is essential for the best wet on wet effects and Arches is a high quality but reasonably priced paper. I recommend the pad for experimentation and the block (see below) for paintings.\n Arches Watercolor Block\, cold pressed   https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/19657/s/arches-watercolor-block-140-lb-cold-pressed-9-x-12/  (or size of your choice)   (not essential)\n Watercolor Paint (pocket box set)  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/37046/s/van-gogh-watercolor-pocket-box-sets/  (or paint of your choice) I especially recommend high quality paints.\n Watercolor Brush\, round size 8  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/40241/s/winsor-newton-professional-watercolor-synthetic-sable-brush-round-size-8/\n Watercolor pencils  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/22039/s/royal-langnickel-watercolor-pencil-essentials-keep-n-carry-set/  or any brand you prefer (optional)\n squeeze bottle   https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/30675/s/jacquard-squeeze-bottles-with-tips/\n a small plastic palette   https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/35235/s/laurin-s-multi-pan-palette/\n Pencils: standard and/or mechanical\n good quality eraser  https://www.cheapjoes.com/catalog/product/view/id/17559/s/general-s-tri-tip-eraser/\n 3  small jars or containers for water 4-6 ounces is sufficient\n paper towels\n\n\n\n\n\nArt Lab will be offered monthly on Thursdays from 5:30 – 7:00pm ET.
