SUMMARY:Caregiver Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Julia Rowland\, Ph.D.\n\n\nThis cancer caregiver support group\, led by a licensed psychologist\, is designed to provide cancer caregivers with the opportunity to meet other caregivers\, learn about useful tools for self-care\, and explore ways to thrive in the caregiving role. \n\n\n\n\nJulia’s Caregiver Support Group meets Bi-Monthly on Mondays from 6:00 – 7:30pm.\n\nUpcoming Sessions:\n\n April 3 & 17\n May 1 & 15\n\nAbout Julia Rowland\, PhD\n\n\nJulia Rowland\, PhD\, who joined Smith Center in October 2017\, comes to this position as a long-time clinician\, researcher and teacher in the area of psychosocial aspects of cancer. She has worked with and conducted competitively funded research among both pediatric and adult cancer survivors and their families\, and published broadly in psycho-oncology\, including co-editing\, along with Dr. Jimmie Holland\, the ground-breaking text\, Handbook of Psychooncology.  She has also been a frequent speaker on cancer survivorship\, or life after cancer\, for both professional and lay audiences.\n\nJulia received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in psychosocial oncology. While at MSKCC\, where she held joint appointments in pediatrics and neurology\, Julia helped to develop and was the first Director of the Post-Treatment Resource Program\, one of the first non-medical survivorship care programs to be offered by a major cancer center in the U.S. In 1990 she moved with her husband and two young children to Washington\, DC to become founding Director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Georgetown University and the Lombardi Cancer Center. There she helped expand services to meet the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and families\, launched some of the first quality of life clinical trials\, and also introduced a program to enable first year medical students to learn the art of caring for those living through and beyond cancer from survivors themselves and Lombardi faculty. Nine years later\, in September of 1999\, she was recruited to the National Cancer Institute to become the first\, full-time Director of the Office of Cancer Survivorship\, a position in which she served for 18 years\, championing the growth of survivorship research and care\, before stepping down in September 2017 to assume her new role at Smith Center. Although new to the team\, Julia is no stranger to Smith Center. She knew Smith Center’s founder\, Barbara Smith Coleman\, and has volunteered her expertise across the years as a speaker\, group leader and staff member for both the 1-day and weeklong residential retreats. Julia brings to her new role a passion to translate what research has taught us about healing in the context of cancer to the broader community\, in essence\, taking the science of survivorship from the lab bench to the park bench.

SUMMARY:Grieving Together: A 6-Week Series
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. Please click <here> to register for this drop-in circle.\nwith Paul Puccinelli and Barbara Reid\n\nPlease join us in a series Healing Circles for Grief “to discover the extent and limits of what is lost\, what is left and what is possible.”  – John Schneider \n\nIf you have lost a loved one\, this is an opportunity to share what is on your heart and mind right now\, to listen and be listened to deeply and generously. Together we create a safe space for listening to messages from our inner experience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur healing circles are a safe and supportive space to walk with each other through these times. Each circle is a blend of sharing and silence\, compassion\, and curiosity. Our agreements ensure acceptance and confidentiality. We honor our own unique paths to healing and respect the choices of others.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSome Assumptions about Grief\n\n The experience of grief is unique for each individual. While we can make some general assumptions\, there is no template that describes the experience for all people.\n Grief is cumulative. That is\, each time loss is grieved\, the grief encompasses the lifetime of loss and the remnants of each experience.\n Grief following a significant loss is most often a lifelong process\, with each pivotal point in life bringing the grief back up to be processed from a new perspective.\n Grief\, loss and suffering fundamentally changes and reshapes the individual.\n Grief is not about forgetting or disconnecting. Rather\, healthy grief is about remembering the parts of self that get lost amidst the experience and reorienting the individual in their relationship with self\, the world and others.\n Grief is a whole body experience: emotional\, physical\, spiritual and intellectual. Each have a wide range of expression which can cue us that grief is present.\n While grief and trauma are often intertwined there are significant differences between them. Trauma should be addressed with trauma specific interventions that often go beyond what is possible in circles.\n\nAdapted from Khris Ford \n\n\n\n\nGrieving Together Healing Circle will meet Weekly on Tuesdays from 10:30am-12:00pm EST for 6 weeks.\n\nGrief Circle Dates:\n\n April 4\, 11\, 18 & 25\n May 9 & 16\n\n\n\n\nAbout Paul Puccinelli\n\n\nSince 2011\, Paul has been providing counseling services to children\, adults\, and couples.   Paul received a strong educational foundation from his graduate degree program at Dominican University\, as well as advanced training at University of California San Francisco’s School of Medicine\, where he completed a program focused on Interprofessional Palliative Care Education. During the last four years\, he has developed a special interest in supporting people and caregivers dealing with Parkinson’s Disease.  And for the last three years\, he has been hosting Grieving Together and Living w/ Cancer healing circles.\nAbout Barbara Reid\n\n\nBarbara lives in the U.K. and has her own supervision\, facilitation and training practice. The wonder of Zoom has enabled her to partner with others over long distances. She draws on contemplative approaches and reflective practices to support people through life passages and transitions\, also offering services and programs to companies\, non-profits\, community groups and individuals. She is a committed mindfulness practitioner and meditator and enjoys introducing people to the practices of self-care and self-compassion that characterise this way of being in the world. She also likes to bring ‘talking circles’ into her practice and her work\, nourishing the qualities of deep listening and attending to our inner voice through creative reflection on poetry\, music\, journaling and art. Barbara is an accredited facilitator of Circles of Trust with the Center for Courage & Renewal in the U.S.\, and is part of the ‘Grieving Together’ circles facilitation team with Healing Circles Global\, also based in the U.S. She is also an accredited teacher of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy programs in the U.K.\, and in addition is an experienced teacher trainer for people seeking to do this work\, having served at the University of Bangor’s (Wales) Centre for Mindfulness Research & Practice for a few years. She recently completed training with David Kessler Training and is certified as a grief educator. Barbara likes to have joy in her life\, and finds this in her circle of friends\, in the world of folk music\, working with textiles\, Nordic walking and t’ai chi\, and of course her cats Mizzle and Perkin.\n\n

After a few years of regular practice\, she knew she wanted to share her positive experiences with others. She has been leading yoga classes in the DC area since 2007 after completing her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Nth Degree Yoga with Martha Rosen. In 2011\, she went back to earn her RYT500. Her personal practice is inspired by Integral Yoga and Sivananda Yoga\, both of which incorporate body and mind into the practice.

Due to the intimate nature of this topic and the supportive space we hope to cultivate\, we encourage you to sign up for this program only if you plan to attend and participate in each of the 4 sessions.\n\nThis group will meet on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:30pm ET.\n\nSession Dates:\n\n \nMarch 7\n March 14\n \nMarch 28\n April 4\n\n\n\n\nAbout Erin Price\, LICSW\, OSW-C\n\n\nErin serves as Smith Center’s Director of Young Adult and Psychosocial Support Programs. SUMMARY:Grieving Together: An Ongoing Circle
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to register and receive the Zoom link\, visit the <Healing Circles Global Registration Page>\nIf you have any questions about this healing circle or registration\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith Mark Malinak and David Spaw\, members of the Grief Team at Healing Circles Global\n\n“Each person’s grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve\, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed.”\n\n-David Kessler\n\n\n\nIf you’ve lost a loved one\, a healing circle for those in grief is an opportunity to share what’s on your heart and mind\, to listen\, and be listened to deeply and generously.\n\n\nOur healing circles are a safe and supportive space to walk with each other through these times.  Each circle is a blend of sharing and silence\, compassion and curiosity. Our agreements ensure acceptance and confidentiality. We honor our own unique paths to healing and respect the choices of others.\n\nThis is an ongoing circle. Therefore\, you are welcome to join at any time.\n\n\n\n\nPlease note: Healing circles are groups of peers who support one another through deep listening and compassion. Circle participants abide by agreements\, including agreements around confidentiality. The volunteers who host healing circles do not provide medical or psychotherapeutic advice or treatment. Participation in a healing circle does not replace the care provided by a qualified healthcare professional.\n\n\nThis circle meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 1:00 – 2:30pm ET.\n\n\n\nHealing circles are offered at no charge. If you’re able\, Healing Circles Global invites you to <make a gift> to help cover the cost of participating.\n\n\nSuggested Donation for one circle: $12 covers the cost of your participation in one circle\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Healing Circles Global\n\n\nHealing Circles Global is a nonprofit whose vision is to provide positive social support to anyone who asks for it. This takes place in small circles built on a framework that brings out the best in people. It encourages participants to treat one another with kindness and respect\, hold one another’s stories in confidence\, withhold judgment\, and honor one another’s unique path to healing without advising\, fixing\, or rescuing.\n\nCircle participants work together to explore the best ways to remove obstacles to healing\, alleviate suffering\, and deepen their capacity to heal. They also access their own inner guidance to determine where the greatest healing—physical\, emotional\, mental\, and spiritual—can occur.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Mark Malinak\n\n\n\nMark is retired\, having worked as a substance abuse/mental health counselor and wilderness counselor for 25 years. He lives alone with his yellow lab mix dog Buster in a small post and beam house in western Massachusetts. Mark’s wife Barbara passed away suddenly in October 2019. He loves poetry\, writing\, and tribal ambient music. Among other hobbies\, Mark enjoys hiking and walking in the woods and the forests of the Berkshires.\nAbout David Spaw\n\n\nDavid is the Founder of Healing Circles Houston. Inspired from his personal experience of healing and by his friend\, Michael Lerner\, and Commonweal co-founder\, David set out to bring Healing Circles to Texas. He lost two wives and a sister to cancer and was drawn to this modality as a pathway to discovery and healing accessible to all. Together with Susan Rafte\, they assembled a team of volunteers\, hosts\, advisers and organizations who were passionate about sharing Healing Circles in community. In the time of Covid the local team joined forces with the global movement\, training circle hosts in 32 countries and 22 healthcare institutions.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid is a retired corporate executive of a regional and international construction company. He has served on many nonprofit boards and community organizations\, most recently at the Jung Center Houston\, Community for Conscious Aging\, the Greater Houston Healing Collaborative and since 2016\, as the Program Director of Commonweal overseeing the Texas initiative.

SUMMARY:Energy Balancing
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Balancing team continues to offer distance sessions. If you wish to receive\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith the Energy Balancing Team\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. When these energies are out of balance\, all our body systems can become askew. One key to bringing us back into balance is deep relaxation. This is just what our volunteers provide – a half-hour of stress reducing relaxation to calm the body and enhance our well-being.\n\nMost likely you are familiar with many of the body’s systems such as the respiratory system\, the digestive system\, the endocrine system\, the skeletal system and so on. But are you aware that we also have subtle energy systems\, systems that cannot be seen\, cannot be measured\, cannot be felt. Perhaps you know of some; the most familiar are the aura (also known as the biofield)\, the meridians\, the chakras.\n\nThese subtle energy systems were very familiar to the ancients. They used them regularly to bring the body into energetic balance. When the body’s energies are in balance\, we function at a higher vibration and are more relaxed\, more joyful\, more centered and able to enjoy life more productively. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nEnergy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n 1:00pm\n 2:20pm\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Energy Balancing Team\nAbout Anne Molofsky\nAnne has always been interested in promoting health and wellness. She had a forty-year career as a nutritionist\, beginning as a research nutritionist in several NIH-funded clinical trials\, then working for the federal government in policy and education\, and subsequently counselling clients in her private practice. She received her reiki training over 10 years ago and was able to offer reiki sessions to her nutrition clients as part of their treatment. Since 2013 Anne has also volunteered at Walter Reed offering reiki sessions to Wounded Warriors and their families. She became a Reiki Master Teacher in 2017. Anne is thrilled to be joining the wonderful Energy Balancing Team at the Smith Center!\nAbout Margaret Haggerty\nIt is a privilege to be part of the energy balancing team for Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.\nHaving had a long and gratifying career as a registered nurse\, I bring a wide range of experiences. Before my retirement nine years ago\, I had worked for 47 years as a nurse in a variety of capacities. Whether I was taking care of a tiny two-pound NICU infant or doing diabetic teaching for a centenarian\, I realized that there was a larger Presence who was always guiding me. And I believe deeply that whatever experience of healing we receive\, involves body\, mind and spirit. I became a massage therapist and Reiki Master in order to incorporate a more deliberate approach to healing touch. It was a privilege to work with many clients who were dealing with cancer. What a joy it was to offer some hope and gentle touch as they faced many medical and emotional challenges. Now in my later years I am happy to bring the soft\, caring touch of energy balancing to help those who come to Smith Center\, to relax in order for. their bodies to mend and their spirits to heal.\nAbout Pat Spellman\n\n\nPat studied English literature and has a special interest in reading and writing poetry. She has been certified as a Reiki master and as a practitioner of reflexology and Feldenkrais movement. She is a long-time member of the Self-Realization Fellowship\, which teaches meditation methods and principles for harmonious living. After a career in publications in DC\, Pat retired in Baltimore where she continues her active interest in the Smith Center and its clients.\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team. Sylvia is a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner and a Reiki Master Teacher. For many years she has managed a Reiki Volunteer group at a seniors’ residence and has served for 6 years as a Reiki volunteer in GWU Hospital. She is delighted to now work with a dedicated and wonderful team to address the balancing of one’s subtle energies in order to allow the body to completely relax. She has an independent practice in Kensington\, MD. To learn more about Sylvia and subtle energies\, please visit her website www.sylviasturm.com.

SUMMARY:Slow Looking and Mindful Poetry
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing olivia@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Theresa Esterlund\n\n\nPractice mindfulness in a new way and open to being – with yourself\, with each other\, with the present moment. In this workshop\, you’ll be guided in a slow looking activity around a single work of art from the Joan Hisaoka gallery as a technique for accessing inner wisdom and sparking creative flow. In conjunction with this mindfulness practice\, you’ll use a series of prompts and poetry writing techniques to express yourself through the written word\, individually and collectively. You’ll discover new insights and fresh perspectives as you build empathy and learn to integrate this type of practice into your journey.\n\nBy slowing down as you look\, you’ll be invited to explore personal insights\, reflections\, and ideas. You’ll also have an opportunity to practice opening to other perspectives and points of view through group participation. Slow looking (or slow art) comes out of the “slow” movement and is often intended to help you look at and learn about artwork\, especially if you are not as comfortable or familiar with art. It can be applied to any kind of looking or listening (at a tree\, a piece of music\, another person)\, and when infused with mindfulness\, it can be a powerful way to connect with yourself and each other.\n\nSuggested Donation: $15/session\n\n\n\nAbout Theresa Esterlund\n\n\nTheresa Esterlund is an artist\, educator\, and mindfulness guide whose teaching draws from her deep experience and expertise. In her mindfulness practices\, she facilitates pathways for integrated mindful living\, creating environments for personal exploration and transformation that are based on individual experiences. Theresa’s collages are windows that open to the inside—as well as abstract landscapes and other arrangements. She currently brings her love of gathering\, sorting\, and composing to letterpress\, which also gives her a path to integrate words and phrases from her poetry. After retiring from a professional career in museum education\, Theresa channeled her vision to inspire compassionate connections into a stationery business\, Open to Being\, that reflects the intersection of her mindfulness and artistic practices. She is also the Executive Director of UpCycle Creative Reuse Center\, an Alexandria-based non-profit that connects creativity and conservation by providing a resource center for reuse materials and a creative making space.

In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Noelle Imparato\n\n\nThis workshop provides a safe and powerful learning container using community building and a “mindfulness painting” practice to foster healing\, spiritual awakening\, and personal transformation.\n\nYou are invited to work from the heart and express your drama in forms and colors. As you paint\, you process your emotions and liberate yourself from the psychological and physical disease they may cause. This is a workshop for processing feelings through painting and group sharing. It is not a good space for finishing existing projects and using other mediums.\n\nBy intentionally focusing on the emotional process rather than the artistic product\, participants are able to unleash their creative powers and produce striking works\, while by sharing their creative process they gain the insight and wisdom often hidden in works created in a state of letting go.\n\nFor more information about Painting for Life and what you can expect during a session\, please explore this manual:\nPFL MANUAL\nTime Slots (please specify when registering):\n\n 10am-12pm\n 3pm-5pm\n\nParticipants are encouraged to drop-in for any session and attend as many sessions as they would like.\nSession Schedule:\nThe Painting For Life workshop on Zoom consists of a 1-hour painting session framed by a 30 minute opening circle (which can often be 45 minutes) and a 30 minute closing circle.\n\nOpening Circle – In the opening circle we build a safe and powerful We-Space\ncommunity characterized by “presencing\,” sharing with honesty and integrity\, deep listening\, and resonating in harmony with each other. Noelle will start this opening circle by giving a quick prompting and end it with a 3-minute meditation before sending people off to paint for exactly 1 hour.\n\n1-hour Painting Session – Participants paint at home\, using cheap materials such as paper\, tempera paints\, watercolors\, acrylics\, or pastels\, Crayolas\, and even color pens. When the hour is over\, people take a picture of their painting and text it to Noelle before coming back to the Zoom room.\n\nClosing Circle – Noelle then shares each painting on the screen as people explore their process while the group may offer feedback and further insights get sparked. We end this closing circle with a group hugs as we shout “May all beings be happy!” thus fusing personal and collective healing together.\n\nSuggested Donation: $15\n\n\n\nAbout Noelle Imparato\n\nArmed with a PhD and her lifelong experience\, Noelle Imparato created Painting For Life\, a process art painting workshop envisioned as a tool for healing\, awakening\, and personal transformation. After 20 years of running it from her home studio in Los Angeles\, France\, Spain\, and Baltimore\, she moved to Zoom due to the pandemic. It allowed her community to grow more international with participants from Canada\, Europe\, and India. Noelle’s life experience includes training and working in architecture and film\, a Ph.D. in mythological studies with an emphasis in depth psychology\, a 30-year mindfulness meditation practice\, and a multitude of retreats especially at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur CA. She is currently writing “Painting For Life\,” a 2-volume book about her personal experience with the healing power of art\, and the method she\ndeveloped with her workshop.

SUMMARY:Healing Circle for Moms with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Niya Kight\n\nThis ongoing healing circle will focus on the unique needs of mothers\, with children of any age\, who are living with cancer. No matter where you find yourself on your journey you will have a chance to be with others who share in your experience. This shared experience will often lead to profound learning and healing.\n\nSome of our children are bound to need us during this program. Please don’t worry about disruptions to care for your child(ren).\n\n\n\nWhat is a Healing Circle?\n\nHealing Circles bring together small numbers of people impacted by a condition or circumstance to share experiences and harvest collective wisdom.  Healing Circles is a peer-led process by which people support each other through deep listening and shared learning. When working at its best\, this collaborative conversation model leads to authentic and deep connectivity and can create wisdom and healing for participants.\n\nThe Healing Circle for Moms with Cancer meets Monthly on the 2nd Monday of each month from 11:00am-12:00pm ET.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n April 10\n May 8\n June 12\n\n\n\n\nAbout Niya Kight\n\n\nNiya Kight was diagnosed with Stage II\, ER/PR + Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in November 2019 on her 31st birthday\, while 12 weeks pregnant. Once Niya reached the middle of her second trimester\, she underwent a mastectomy and four rounds of chemotherapy before delivering her daughter in May. Niya is currently finishing the last four rounds of chemotherapy and next up on the road to recovery is radiation. When Niya embarked upon this journey\, she chose to view it as her rebirth and shared that “she would rise healthier and stronger than ever after this spiritual transformation”. Niya has done just that as she focused inwardly to determine the changes she needed to make in her life\, learned to accept help\, and shared her vulnerability and experience with others. Niya is passionate about raising awareness about pregnancy and breast cancer because many people do not know that it is possible to have cancer while pregnant\, let alone that it can actually be treated during pregnancy. Niya remembers the loneliness she felt while navigating breast cancer while pregnant and wants to help eliminate that additional stress for other women.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Strengthening Each Other: A Healing Circle for Muslim Sisters Living with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This meeting has been cancelled. Meetings will resume on Saturday\, May 6th from 10-11:30am ET. Meetings will now be held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday. If you would like to join this group\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith Gina Petonito\n \nFor Indeed\, with hardship comes ease\nIndeed\, with hardship comes ease.\nAl-Inshirah 94:5-6\nCancer! The word evokes fear and dread. And then the unthinkable happens. You get your diagnosis\, and just like that\, your life turns upside down. You enter a realm of tests\, procedures\, infusions\, radiation\, and operations. You are surrounded by people: caregivers\, healing professionals\, family\, and friends. Yet\, you feel all alone. Sisters\, you can find companionship on this journey. In a healing circle. The Smith Center for Healing and the Arts has graciously agreed to sponsor a healing circle just for us: Muslim Sisters. The Circle will provide a safe and accepting space\, where we can share our stories and heal together. Yes\, we are patient. But healing circles allow us to persevere. Let’s let our healing circle provide us with the ease Allah (SWT) promises and that we so richly\ndeserve.\n\nThis circle will meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Meetings will resume on May 6th and continue for 12 weeks.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n May 6 & 20\n June 3 & 17\n July 1 & 15\n August 5 & 19\n September 2 & 16\n October 7 & 21\n\n\n\n\nAbout Gina Petonito\, PhD\n\n\nGina Petonito is a retired university professor\, current business and life coach\, and a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Stage IIa\, ER/PR+ invasive ductal carcinoma in November 2021\, upgraded to Level IIIa after surgery. She underwent treatment throughout 2022 and is currently cancer free. Determined to have a productive life despite the arduous procedures\, Gina completed an 83\,000-word historical fiction manuscript\, and moved forward with her\nbusinesses Writing Your Way and Academic Womxn Reclaim Your Power.\n\nA convert to Islam since 1984\, Gina created a gratitude series for Muslim women\, titled 99 Days of Gratitude: A Practice for Sisters. This practice\, uploaded to YouTube focuses upon one of the Beautiful Names of God each day\, and suggests related supplications\, gratitude items\, and affirmations. The practice allowed her to place cancer into its proper perspective as one negative in a life of abundant blessings\, ma sha Allah. Nevertheless\, cancer often plunges a person into loneliness\, which support can alleviate. I firmly believe that together we sisters can strengthen each other in our deen and in our worldly life. Together\, we can come to terms with cancer\, be patient AND persevere.\n\nGina lives in the greater Cincinnati\, Ohio area and spends her free time at home with her beloved family. She enjoys studying history\, reading\, writing\, and connecting with women all over the globe.

SUMMARY:Creating Symbols for Personal Power
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Simone Banks Mackey (They/Them/Theirs)\n \nUsing modern and ancient techniques of developing symbols allows your imagination to wonder and form a personal affirmation sigil. A Sigil\, in a greater sense\, is a symbol that represents a meaning. Where they differ is how/why we create them. This process is not only therapeutic but extremely individualized. Each sigil contains specific messaging that is meant to empower you. Using meditation\, herbal teas\, movement\, food\, music\, and/or scents\, we intentionally create an environment that empowers us to imbue our intentions into our sigil fully. A process that can result in the simplest of shapes to the most elaborate of forms.\n\nAfter your affirmation sigil is created it is charged with your energy and can be used whenever you need to affirm your power. Whether that be on your hallway mirror\, daily bag\, passenger dashboard\, clothes/shoes\, or even yourself its intention will hold.\n\nThe theme of the month will be shared at the beginning of each session.\n \nSuggested Materials: \n\n Writing utensils (pens\, markers\, paint\, etc.)\n Canvas (paper\, book\, hat\, guitar\, etc.)\n Water (for drinking)\n Set your “empowerment mood” (clothing\, food\, scents\, lighting\, etc.)\n\n\nSuggested Donation: $10\n\n\n\nAbout Simone Banks Mackey\nSince childhood\, Simone Banks Mackey (They/Them/Theirs) has always been an eccentric being that had an insatiable passion for life and helping others. After attending undergraduate school to study multiple Studio Arts disciplines and nonprofit management they decided to continue community-centered work. Teaching preschool offered Simone the opportunity to creatively expose children to multiple forms of art. However\, they realized the magnitude of how structural stability within the home affects both parents’ mental/emotional/physical wellbeing and the children’s cognitive development. Simone then decided to work with grassroots organization that provided families with tools to be self-sufficient. It was during this time Eccentric Whims was born. While creating and hosting programming to artistically teach parents and children\, Simone realized how they could combine their passion for art with community uplifting. Eccentric Whims catapults love and healing into the world by using a multitude of traditional and nontraditional art forms to foster creative thinking and promote healing/wellness while building community. Through carefully crafted community events surrounding any range and of non/traditional art forms such as mixed media collages\, decor/crafts\, visual media\, and movement Simone creates safe spaces for people to express themselves and/or learn. Art is universal and through Art\, we can communicate\, commune\, and create a greater society.

The Social Hour sessions will only run from 10:30 – 11:30am. \n\nUpcoming sessions:\n\n April 12 (social hour)\n April 26 \n May 3 (social hour)\n May 17\n\nSuggested donation: $10 per class\n\nOur programs are open to the community\, and tailored to meet the needs of people affected by cancer.
