Upon returning home to Washington\, DC for reconstruction again no community for support\, safe space and sharing.  \nAs an educator and administrator for more than 15 years\, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and Master’s Degree in Education. DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing olivia@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Linda Seabright\nin partnership with Tigerlily Foundation\n*Please note that by registering for this program\, you consent to have your name and email shared with Tigerlily Foundation. Tigerlily only collects this information for data purposes and it will not be shared with any other parties.\n\n\n\n\nMindfulness is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as it was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Ph.D.\n\nDr. Kabat-Zinn and his program were featured prominently in the award-winning PBS television series Healing and the Mind. The profound effects of this work have begun to be strongly supported by a large body of scientific research.\n\nSpecifically\, mindfulness helps you access the ability to be non-judgmental\, compassionate\, patient\, present and aware. You wouldn’t have come this far if these qualities did not exist in you somewhere. Possible benefits may be a greater sense of peace and well-being.\n\nWe will take a few moments to check into how we’re feeling in the beginning of the meditation and afterward. We’ll sit or lie comfortably and go through a slightly different guided meditation each week. No experience needed.\nBeing Together Mindfulness meets weekly on Fridays from 12:00pm – 12:30pm ET.\n\nSuggested Donation: $5/session\n\n\n\n\nAbout Linda Seabright\n\n\n Linda Seabright has been teaching Mindfulness and Meditation since she completed her training in MBSR\, or Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction\, at the University of California\, San Diego\, School of Medicine in 2016. Linda is a life-long practitioner of yoga\, a cancer survivor\, and has studied expressive art therapy since 2010. Her passion  for artistic and musical expression have inspired her to bring the same dedication to her meditation teachings\, bringing a wide array of experience to her practice. She also teaches trauma-based meditation to nonprofits and has developed a series of meditations to help bring peace and balance into people’s lives. More information at www.jazzmeditation.com.

Denise Feldman\, a local mixed-media artist and cancer thriver\, hosts this monthly gathering in (virtual) community as we talk and stitch—a powerful meditative and healing practice. Gathering as many have done for centuries\, Denise will share tips and ideas for using needle and thread to bring joy and creativity to our everyday lives. Use her ideas to jump start your own\, or bring your favorite hand work projects and join us for community stitching time!\n \nThis community stitching circle is for you! For example\, maybe you’ve been hand sewing for years; you might be interested in exploring the recent revival of the “slow-stitch” movement; maybe you are are a needle pointer with a project to finish. Or\, you might simply enjoy the meditative nature of hand making with needle and thread.\n \nYou may consider bringing:\n\n needles and thread\,\n an old pair of jeans or other clothing that was headed to charity\,\n left over fabric from another project\,\n or simply bring yourself for some (virtual) time in community.\n\n\n\n\n\nStitched Together will be offered Monthly on Saturdays 10:00 – 11:30am ET. \n\nUpcoming Dates: \n\n April 15\n May 13\n June `10\n\nSuggested Donation: $10\n\n\n\nAbout Denise Feldman\nDenise Feldman is a local mixed media artist who discovered the power of creativity as a healing practice after her treatment for breast cancer in 2014. As a creative ‘dabbler’ who loves working with various materials and surfaces\, Denise shares her mixed media processes and soulful perspective with the hope of inspiring others to tell their stories ‘on and off the page’ and clear space for life’s chapters yet to come.\n\n“My philosophy is simply that telling our stories helps us heal by giving us the space to process our own experiences and connect with each other. Getting our stories out from our hearts and our heads helps make room for the next chapter to happen…the one just waiting there in the wings.” ~Denise

SUMMARY:Painting for Life
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Noelle Imparato\n\n\nThis workshop provides a safe and powerful learning container using community building and a “mindfulness painting” practice to foster healing\, spiritual awakening\, and personal transformation.\n\nYou are invited to work from the heart and express your drama in forms and colors. As you paint\, you process your emotions and liberate yourself from the psychological and physical disease they may cause. This is a workshop for processing feelings through painting and group sharing. It is not a good space for finishing existing projects and using other mediums.\n\nBy intentionally focusing on the emotional process rather than the artistic product\, participants are able to unleash their creative powers and produce striking works\, while by sharing their creative process they gain the insight and wisdom often hidden in works created in a state of letting go.\n\nFor more information about Painting for Life and what you can expect during a session\, please explore this manual:\nPFL MANUAL\nTime Slots (please specify when registering):\n\n 10am-12pm\n 3pm-5pm\n\nParticipants are encouraged to drop-in for any session and attend as many sessions as they would like.\nSession Schedule:\nThe Painting For Life workshop on Zoom consists of a 1-hour painting session framed by a 30 minute opening circle (which can often be 45 minutes) and a 30 minute closing circle.\n\nOpening Circle – In the opening circle we build a safe and powerful We-Space\ncommunity characterized by “presencing\,” sharing with honesty and integrity\, deep listening\, and resonating in harmony with each other. Noelle will start this opening circle by giving a quick prompting and end it with a 3-minute meditation before sending people off to paint for exactly 1 hour.\n\n1-hour Painting Session – Participants paint at home\, using cheap materials such as paper\, tempera paints\, watercolors\, acrylics\, or pastels\, Crayolas\, and even color pens. When the hour is over\, people take a picture of their painting and text it to Noelle before coming back to the Zoom room.\n\nClosing Circle – Noelle then shares each painting on the screen as people explore their process while the group may offer feedback and further insights get sparked. We end this closing circle with a group hugs as we shout “May all beings be happy!” thus fusing personal and collective healing together.\n\nSuggested Donation: $15\n\n\n\nAbout Noelle Imparato\n\nArmed with a PhD and her lifelong experience\, Noelle Imparato created Painting For Life\, a process art painting workshop envisioned as a tool for healing\, awakening\, and personal transformation. After 20 years of running it from her home studio in Los Angeles\, France\, Spain\, and Baltimore\, she moved to Zoom due to the pandemic. It allowed her community to grow more international with participants from Canada\, Europe\, and India. Noelle’s life experience includes training and working in architecture and film\, a Ph.D. in mythological studies with an emphasis in depth psychology\, a 30-year mindfulness meditation practice\, and a multitude of retreats especially at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur CA. She is currently writing “Painting For Life\,” a 2-volume book about her personal experience with the healing power of art\, and the method she\ndeveloped with her workshop.

SUMMARY:Caregiver Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Julia Rowland\, Ph.D.\n\n\nThis cancer caregiver support group\, led by a licensed psychologist\, is designed to provide cancer caregivers with the opportunity to meet other caregivers\, learn about useful tools for self-care\, and explore ways to thrive in the caregiving role. \n\n\n\n\nJulia’s Caregiver Support Group meets Bi-Monthly on Mondays from 6:00 – 7:30pm.\n\nUpcoming Sessions:\n\n April 3 & 17\n May 1 & 15\n June 5 & 19\n\nAbout Julia Rowland\, PhD\n\n\nJulia Rowland\, PhD\, who joined Smith Center in October 2017\, comes to this position as a long-time clinician\, researcher and teacher in the area of psychosocial aspects of cancer. She has worked with and conducted competitively funded research among both pediatric and adult cancer survivors and their families\, and published broadly in psycho-oncology\, including co-editing\, along with Dr. Jimmie Holland\, the ground-breaking text\, Handbook of Psychooncology.  She has also been a frequent speaker on cancer survivorship\, or life after cancer\, for both professional and lay audiences.\n\nJulia received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in psychosocial oncology. While at MSKCC\, where she held joint appointments in pediatrics and neurology\, Julia helped to develop and was the first Director of the Post-Treatment Resource Program\, one of the first non-medical survivorship care programs to be offered by a major cancer center in the U.S. In 1990 she moved with her husband and two young children to Washington\, DC to become founding Director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Georgetown University and the Lombardi Cancer Center. There she helped expand services to meet the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and families\, launched some of the first quality of life clinical trials\, and also introduced a program to enable first year medical students to learn the art of caring for those living through and beyond cancer from survivors themselves and Lombardi faculty. Nine years later\, in September of 1999\, she was recruited to the National Cancer Institute to become the first\, full-time Director of the Office of Cancer Survivorship\, a position in which she served for 18 years\, championing the growth of survivorship research and care\, before stepping down in September 2017 to assume her new role at Smith Center. Although new to the team\, Julia is no stranger to Smith Center. She knew Smith Center’s founder\, Barbara Smith Coleman\, and has volunteered her expertise across the years as a speaker\, group leader and staff member for both the 1-day and weeklong residential retreats. Julia brings to her new role a passion to translate what research has taught us about healing in the context of cancer to the broader community\, in essence\, taking the science of survivorship from the lab bench to the park bench.

SUMMARY:Grieving Together: An Ongoing Circle
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to register and receive the Zoom link\, visit the <Healing Circles Global Registration Page>\nIf you have any questions about this healing circle or registration\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith Mark Malinak and David Spaw\, members of the Grief Team at Healing Circles Global\n\n“Each person’s grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve\, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed.”\n\n-David Kessler\n\n\n\nIf you’ve lost a loved one\, a healing circle for those in grief is an opportunity to share what’s on your heart and mind\, to listen\, and be listened to deeply and generously.\n\n\nOur healing circles are a safe and supportive space to walk with each other through these times.  Each circle is a blend of sharing and silence\, compassion and curiosity. Our agreements ensure acceptance and confidentiality. We honor our own unique paths to healing and respect the choices of others.\n\nThis is an ongoing circle. Therefore\, you are welcome to join at any time.\n\n\n\n\nPlease note: Healing circles are groups of peers who support one another through deep listening and compassion. Circle participants abide by agreements\, including agreements around confidentiality. The volunteers who host healing circles do not provide medical or psychotherapeutic advice or treatment. Participation in a healing circle does not replace the care provided by a qualified healthcare professional.\n\n\nThis circle meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 1:00 – 2:30pm ET.\n\n\n\nHealing circles are offered at no charge. If you’re able\, Healing Circles Global invites you to <make a gift> to help cover the cost of participating.\n\n\nSuggested Donation for one circle: $12 covers the cost of your participation in one circle\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Healing Circles Global\n\n\nHealing Circles Global is a nonprofit whose vision is to provide positive social support to anyone who asks for it. This takes place in small circles built on a framework that brings out the best in people. It encourages participants to treat one another with kindness and respect\, hold one another’s stories in confidence\, withhold judgment\, and honor one another’s unique path to healing without advising\, fixing\, or rescuing.\n\nCircle participants work together to explore the best ways to remove obstacles to healing\, alleviate suffering\, and deepen their capacity to heal. They also access their own inner guidance to determine where the greatest healing—physical\, emotional\, mental\, and spiritual—can occur.\n\n\n\nAbout Mark Malinak\n\n\n\nMark is retired\, having worked as a substance abuse/mental health counselor and wilderness counselor for 25 years. He lives alone with his yellow lab mix dog Buster in a small post and beam house in western Massachusetts. Mark’s wife Barbara passed away suddenly in October 2019. He loves poetry\, writing\, and tribal ambient music. Among other hobbies\, Mark enjoys hiking and walking in the woods and the forests of the Berkshires.\nAbout David Spaw\n\n\nDavid is the Founder of Healing Circles Houston. Inspired from his personal experience of healing and by his friend\, Michael Lerner\, and Commonweal co-founder\, David set out to bring Healing Circles to Texas. He lost two wives and a sister to cancer and was drawn to this modality as a pathway to discovery and healing accessible to all. Together with Susan Rafte\, they assembled a team of volunteers\, hosts\, advisers and organizations who were passionate about sharing Healing Circles in community. In the time of Covid the local team joined forces with the global movement\, training circle hosts in 32 countries and 22 healthcare institutions.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid is a retired corporate executive of a regional and international construction company. He has served on many nonprofit boards and community organizations\, most recently at the Jung Center Houston\, Community for Conscious Aging\, the Greater Houston Healing Collaborative and since 2016\, as the Program Director of Commonweal overseeing the Texas initiative.

SUMMARY:Energy Balancing
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Balancing team continues to offer distance sessions. If you wish to receive\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith the Energy Balancing Team\n\nOur Energy Balancing Program addresses the subtle energies of our body. When these energies are out of balance\, all our body systems can become askew. One key to bringing us back into balance is deep relaxation. This is just what our volunteers provide – a half-hour of stress reducing relaxation to calm the body and enhance our well-being.\n\nMost likely you are familiar with many of the body’s systems such as the respiratory system\, the digestive system\, the endocrine system\, the skeletal system and so on. But are you aware that we also have subtle energy systems\, systems that cannot be seen\, cannot be measured\, cannot be felt. Perhaps you know of some; the most familiar are the aura (also known as the biofield)\, the meridians\, the chakras.\n\nThese subtle energy systems were very familiar to the ancients. They used them regularly to bring the body into energetic balance. When the body’s energies are in balance\, we function at a higher vibration and are more relaxed\, more joyful\, more centered and able to enjoy life more productively. Many of the age-old techniques are now being used to bring calm to the body and to optimize one’s well-being.\n\n\n\nEnergy Balancing is offered Weekly on Thursdays in 1/2 hour appointments.\n\nBy appointment only. \n\nTime slots:\n\n 1:00pm\n 2:20pm\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Energy Balancing Team\nAbout Anne Molofsky\nAnne has always been interested in promoting health and wellness. She had a forty-year career as a nutritionist\, beginning as a research nutritionist in several NIH-funded clinical trials\, then working for the federal government in policy and education\, and subsequently counselling clients in her private practice. She received her reiki training over 10 years ago and was able to offer reiki sessions to her nutrition clients as part of their treatment. Since 2013 Anne has also volunteered at Walter Reed offering reiki sessions to Wounded Warriors and their families. She became a Reiki Master Teacher in 2017. Anne is thrilled to be joining the wonderful Energy Balancing Team at the Smith Center!\nAbout Margaret Haggerty\nIt is a privilege to be part of the energy balancing team for Smith Center for Healing and the Arts.\nHaving had a long and gratifying career as a registered nurse\, I bring a wide range of experiences. Before my retirement nine years ago\, I had worked for 47 years as a nurse in a variety of capacities. Whether I was taking care of a tiny two-pound NICU infant or doing diabetic teaching for a centenarian\, I realized that there was a larger Presence who was always guiding me. And I believe deeply that whatever experience of healing we receive\, involves body\, mind and spirit. I became a massage therapist and Reiki Master in order to incorporate a more deliberate approach to healing touch. It was a privilege to work with many clients who were dealing with cancer. What a joy it was to offer some hope and gentle touch as they faced many medical and emotional challenges. Now in my later years I am happy to bring the soft\, caring touch of energy balancing to help those who come to Smith Center\, to relax in order for. their bodies to mend and their spirits to heal.\nAbout Pat Spellman\n\n\nPat studied English literature and has a special interest in reading and writing poetry. She has been certified as a Reiki master and as a practitioner of reflexology and Feldenkrais movement. She is a long-time member of the Self-Realization Fellowship\, which teaches meditation methods and principles for harmonious living. After a career in publications in DC\, Pat retired in Baltimore where she continues her active interest in the Smith Center and its clients.\nAbout Sylvia Sturm\n\n\nSylvia Sturm\, EEM-CLP\, RM/T\, heads our Energy Balancing volunteer team. Sylvia is a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner and a Reiki Master Teacher. For many years she has managed a Reiki Volunteer group at a seniors’ residence and has served for 6 years as a Reiki volunteer in GWU Hospital. She is delighted to now work with a dedicated and wonderful team to address the balancing of one’s subtle energies in order to allow the body to completely relax. She has an independent practice in Kensington\, MD. To learn more about Sylvia and subtle energies\, please visit her website www.sylviasturm.com.

SUMMARY:Radical Writing Space
DESCRIPTION:This program is being offered virtually through Zoom. In order to participate and receive the Zoom link\, register by clicking the RSVP button above or by emailing programs@smithcenter.org.\nYou will receive the Zoom information no later than the morning of your program.\nwith Kiersten Gallagher & Mindy Brodsky\, LCSWA\n\nWherever you are on life’s journey\, there are times when it can feel impossible to commit to a recurring program like a workshop series. Radical Writing Space is our answer to this conundrum of wanting to attend for some radical self-care\, but struggling to commit.\n \nClinical studies have documented the healing psychological and psychical impacts of writing within a safe and sacred space. On the second Friday of each month\, drop in for one hour for Radical Writing Space and join us for inspiring writing prompts\, time to write\, and time to share with one another about your experience of putting your most radical emotions\, feelings\, and experiences on paper.\n \nThe part that makes this writing so “radical” is that we create a safe space for it all — raw feelings\, emotions\, experiences — and\, together\, we give voice to them in a supportive\, nonjudgmental environment.\n\n \nThis healing program offers a place for supporting one another and we stay clear of writing critique. Come and experience writing and sharing together.\n \nThis month’s Radical Writing theme is “Calm” – What does it feel like? How do we tap into it?\n\nWhen the sunset and the twilight in mingling hues are bent\,\n\nI can sit and watch the shadows\n\nwith my full heart all content.\n\n-Mary E. Nealey\n\n\n\nRadical Writing Space will be hosted Monthly on the 2nd Friday from 11am – 12:30pm ET. No previous writing experience necessary. Drop-ins welcome!\n\nUpcoming Dates: \n\n April 21\n May 12\n June 9\n\n\n\n\nAbout Kiersten Gallagher\n\n\nKiersten has served as the Cancer Support Program Director for Smith Center since 2014. She believes in a holistic approach to healing\, human relationships and is grateful for each and every day. In her spare time\, you may find Kiersten laughing with friends\, cycling\, taking art classes\, practicing yoga and spending time with her husband Shane\, son Liam\, and dogs Beans and Pablo.\nAbout Mindy Brodsky\, LCSWA\n\nMindy Brodsky specializes in trauma-informed\, strengths-based counseling with a passion for integrative health and healing. Mindy honors her clients as the experts of their lives\, and she strives to provide a supportive and safe environment.\n\nAfter a career in social justice advocacy and her own challenging health journey\, Mindy aspires to meet her clients where they are to help them achieve their goals.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Strengthening Each Other: A Healing Circle for Muslim Sisters Living with Cancer
DESCRIPTION:This meeting has been cancelled. Meetings will resume on Saturday\, May 6th from 10-11:30am ET. Meetings will now be held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday. If you would like to join this group\, please email olivia@smithcenter.org.\nwith Gina Petonito\nFor Indeed\, with hardship comes ease\nIndeed\, with hardship comes ease.\nAl-Inshirah 94:5-6\nCancer! The word evokes fear and dread. And then the unthinkable happens. You get your diagnosis\, and just like that\, your life turns upside down. You enter a realm of tests\, procedures\, infusions\, radiation\, and operations. You are surrounded by people: caregivers\, healing professionals\, family\, and friends. Yet\, you feel all alone. Sisters\, you can find companionship on this journey. In a healing circle. The Smith Center for Healing and the Arts has graciously agreed to sponsor a healing circle just for us: Muslim Sisters. The Circle will provide a safe and accepting space\, where we can share our stories and heal together. Yes\, we are patient. But healing circles allow us to persevere. Let’s let our healing circle provide us with the ease Allah (SWT) promises and that we so richly\ndeserve.\n\nThis circle will meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Meetings will resume on May 6th and continue for 12 weeks.\n\nUpcoming Dates:\n\n May 6 & 20\n June 3 & 17\n July 1 & 15\n August 5 & 19\n September 2 & 16\n October 7 & 21\n\n\n\n\nAbout Gina Petonito\, PhD\n\n\nGina Petonito is a retired university professor\, current business and life coach\, and a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with Stage IIa\, ER/PR+ invasive ductal carcinoma in November 2021\, upgraded to Level IIIa after surgery. She underwent treatment throughout 2022 and is currently cancer free. Determined to have a productive life despite the arduous procedures\, Gina completed an 83\,000-word historical fiction manuscript\, and moved forward with her\nbusinesses Writing Your Way and Academic Womxn Reclaim Your Power.\n\nA convert to Islam since 1984\, Gina created a gratitude series for Muslim women\, titled 99 Days of Gratitude: A Practice for Sisters. This practice\, uploaded to YouTube focuses upon one of the Beautiful Names of God each day\, and suggests related supplications\, gratitude items\, and affirmations. The practice allowed her to place cancer into its proper perspective as one negative in a life of abundant blessings\, ma sha Allah. Nevertheless\, cancer often plunges a person into loneliness\, which support can alleviate. I firmly believe that together we sisters can strengthen each other in our deen and in our worldly life. Together\, we can come to terms with cancer\, be patient AND persevere.\n\nGina lives in the greater Cincinnati\, Ohio area and spends her free time at home with her beloved family. She enjoys studying history\, reading\, writing\, and connecting with women all over the globe.
