Denise Feldman\, a local mixed-media artist and cancer thriver\, hosts this quarterly gathering in (virtual) community sharing her casual\, creative approach to relaxing expression. In each quarterly workshop Denise will share a new project and demonstrate the processes she uses to create\, including her tips and techniques for using creativity as a healing practice. No experience needed\, and all are welcome!Workshop #3: Affirmation Tags and Meditative Tassels \n\n\n\nIn this workshop we’ll use simple materials you may already have in your craft supplies or junk drawer to create these scrappy and meaningful additions to your creative toolkit: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n-Scrap message tags-Scrap fiber tassels \n\n\n\nDenise will share her mixed media\, multi-layered collage processes\, including two techniques for doing image transfers. \n\n\n\nThe possibilities are endless – handmade tags can be used as affirmation cards\, left as ‘random acts of art’ in your community\, shared with friends\, hung as garlands/banners\, or displayed. SUMMARY:Perception: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\n\n\n\nThe Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery is pleased to present Perception\, an exhibition of paintings by Washington\, DC-based artist Craig Cahoon exploring the intersection of light\, color\, memory\, and visual experience. This exhibition will open on Friday\, October 2nd\, with an Opening Reception from 6–8 PM. \n\n\n\nCahoon’s paintings are built through layered applications of semi-transparent color\, fluid marks\, and iridescent interference paints. As light moves across the surface and viewers shift their position\, colors appear to materialize\, dissolve\, and transform. This constant change is central to the exhibition\, inviting viewers to consider perception not as something fixed\, but as an experience shaped by movement\, environment\, and point of view. \n\n\n\nA key component of Perception is Cahoon’s Apparition series. The imagery first emerged from the idea of a benevolent\, light-emitting presence\, leading Cahoon to create floating\, ambiguous forms that seem suspended between atmosphere and physical matter. The works occupy a liminal space between stillness and movement\, clarity and uncertainty. \n\n\n\n“The Apparition paintings are light-reflecting floating entities in a liminal space\,” Cahoon explains. “They are material manifestations of immaterial light and color.” \n\n\n\nThe exhibition also draws from Cahoon’s longstanding engagement with the natural world. Walks through forests and landscapes inform his observations of changing light\, growth\, resilience\, and the relationships between colors and forms. His Botanical paintings translate these experiences into imagined organic shapes and unexpected color combinations. \n\n\n\nIn the Synchromy series\, Cahoon focuses more directly on color itself. Two fields of color meet along a shared edge\, creating a dynamic tension between separation and unity. The works explore how contrasting colors can be understood individually or experienced simultaneously as parts of an integrated whole. \n\n\n\nAcross these bodies of work\, Cahoon approaches painting as both a material investigation and a meditative process. His use of transparent layers and reflective surfaces encourages viewers to move around the work and experience it over time. What appears from one angle may shift entirely from another. \n\n\n\nUltimately\, Perception considers the instability and subjectivity of seeing. Cahoon’s paintings ask viewers to slow down and recognize how light\, movement\, memory\, and perspective continually reshape what is in front of us. \n\n\n\nBased in Washington\, DC\, Craig Cahoon has developed a painting practice centered on sustained observation\, material experimentation\, and the translation of perceptual experience into paint. \n\n\n\nCahoon has received twenty-five artist residency fellowships in the United States and internationally\, as well as six grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. He has also received support from the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation\, The Painted Bride in Philadelphia\, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. \n\n\n\nHe was selected as an American Artist Abroad by the U.S. Department of State and has presented his work in more than 25 solo exhibitions and 80 group exhibitions. His work has appeared in exhibitions including Apparitions at the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at Smith Center for Healing and the Arts and LightWeight at the American Center for Physics. A mid-career retrospective\, Reflections\, was presented at the Embassy of Slovakia in Washington\, DC. \n\n\n\nCahoon’s paintings are held in more than 170 public and private collections\, including IBM\, the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia\, and Children’s National Hospital in Washington\, DC. \n\n\n\nFor press inquiries\, images\, and additional information\, please contact: Sara Khambalia\, Gallery Director\, Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery\, sara@smithcenter.org \n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition will open on Friday\, October 2nd\, with an Opening Reception from 6–8 PM. \n\n\n\nOn view through January 3\, 2027 at Smith Center\, 1632 U St NW\, Washington\, DC 20009. \n\n\n\nPlease contact the gallery manager at sara@smithcenter.org to schedule your appointment.

SUMMARY:Healing Circle: Grupo de Apoyo LGBTQIA+ con Cáncer de Próstata Para Hispanoparlantes (en Español)
(13:30-15:00 ET). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProstate cancer (PC) is a reality that also affects the LGBTQIA+ community. It is the most frequent tumor in people with a prostate\, the second most common worldwide and the fifth in mortality. There is no evidence to relate PC to sexual orientation. Most diagnoses occur in people over 65\, being very rare in those under 40. The LGBTQIA+ group faces a triple taboo in relation to prostate cancer. On the one hand\, it is a cancer that is not often spoken of in our society because it affects the traditional concept of masculinity. On the other hand\, this silence is aggravated by our sexuality. This situation can affect the treatments we receive\, due to the lack of information on the side effects of treatments in relation to our sexual orientation and our sexual practices. And\, finally\, there is another important condition: age. The generation that is currently being diagnosed has been marginalized and discriminated against\, so they are often afraid to ask questions related to intimacy. \n\n\n\nWhat we propose is to create a space to talk about our experiences\, the treatments we receive\, our emotions\, how we feel\, how PC affects our relationships\, and the tools we have to face our difficulties. It is very difficult to find a support group for Spanish speakers in the the LGBTQIA+ community. In this group you will find support. \n\n\n\nThe Healing Circle for Spanish-Speaking LGBTQIA+ Men with Prostate Cancer meets Monthly on the 1st Monday of each month from 7:30 – 9:00PM Madrid Time Zone/1:30 – 3:00 PM EST. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Healing Circle Host \, \n Alfonso Luis\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Healing Circle Host \, \n Charles Domingue\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

Participants may join by internet or via phone.  \n\n\n\nIf interested in attending\, please email groundingpresence@proton.me for the Zoom link. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Movement and Meditation Facilitator \, \n Susan Salek\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

Starter kits are available\, as is a small selection of yarn and knitting supplies. \n\n\n\nOur Knitting Circle meets Weekly on Wednesdays from 3:00 – 4:30pm ET. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Creativity Program Facilitator \, \n Ilene Gast\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:SC Writes: A Place for Radical Writing
DESCRIPTION:Wherever you are on life’s journey\, there are times when it can feel impossible to commit to a recurring program like a workshop series. Radical Writing Space is our answer to this conundrum of wanting to attend for some radical self-care\, but struggling to commit. \n\n\n\nClinical studies have documented the healing psychological and psychical impacts of writing within a safe and sacred space. On the second Friday of each month\, drop in for one hour for Radical Writing Space and join us for inspiring writing prompts\, time to write\, and time to share with one another about your experience of putting your most radical emotions\, feelings\, and experiences on paper. \n\n\n\nThe part that makes this writing so “radical” is that we create a safe space for it all — raw feelings\, emotions\, experiences — and\, together\, we give voice to them in a supportive\, nonjudgmental environment. \n\n\n\nThis healing program offers a place for supporting one another and we stay clear of writing critique. Come and experience writing and sharing together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Cancer Support Program Director | Program Facilitator and Healing Circle Host \, \n Kiersten Gallagher\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:Survivorship Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This group is designed for cancer survivors who have completed their primary cancer treatment(s) and are now either post-treatment or on maintenance medication (such as hormonal therapy). Cancer can be emotionally and physically draining — many times we aren’t able to fully process the experience until after treatment is over and we are trying to get back to our “normal” lives. The struggle and expectation to find “normal” again can also be an overwhelming process. This group is a space where you can talk openly about these issues and process the trauma of cancer with other survivors. \n\n\n\nThe group meets monthly on the 2nd Tuesday from 6:30-7:30pm ET on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Support Group Facilitator \, \n Lashondra Love\, LGSW\, LMSW\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:Room for Grief
DESCRIPTION:Room for Grief: A Monthly Space for Loss From Bereavement\n\n\n\n“Each person’s grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve\, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed.” \n\n\n\n-David Kessler \n\n\n\nIf you’ve lost a loved one\, a healing circle for those in grief is an opportunity to share what’s on your heart and mind\, to listen\, and be listened to deeply and generously. \n\n\n\nOur healing circles are a safe and supportive space to walk with each other through these times.  Each circle is a blend of sharing and silence\, compassion and curiosity. Our agreements ensure acceptance and confidentiality. We honor our own unique paths to healing and respect the choices of others. \n\n\n\nThis is an ongoing circle. Therefore\, you are welcome to join at any time. \n\n\n\nPlease Note: Healing circles are groups of peers who support one another through deep listening and compassion. Circle participants abide by agreements\, including agreements around confidentiality. The volunteers who host healing circles do not provide medical or psychotherapeutic advice or treatment. Participation in a healing circle does not replace the care provided by a qualified healthcare professional. \n\n\n\nThis circle meets on the third Monday of the month.  \n\n\n\nIn order to register and receive the Zoom link\, visit the <Healing Circles Global Registration Page> \n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Grief Team Healing Circle Host \, \n Laqwa Matilpi\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer

SUMMARY:LGBTQIA+ Morning Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Come together as an LGBTQIA+ community for a weekly morning meditation sit.  \n\n\n\nWe will settle in for a few minutes\, then meditation (guided and silence) for 20 minutes and end with around the virtual circle with a few words of gratitude. \n\n\n\nNote: Because this is an online sit\, participants are encouraged to find space of relative quiet\, limiting the amount of interaction with others in the environment as much as possible. Participants may join by internet or via phone.  \n\n\n\nIf interested in attending\, please email groundingpresence@proton.me for the Zoom link. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Movement and Meditation Facilitator \, \n Susan Salek\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizer
