Join us weekly to enjoy knitting in a safe and welcoming environment. Knitting can provide a respite from one’s immediate situation, serve as a way to productively pass the time, and have a positive effect on reducing stress symptoms. It is relatively easy to learn, requires no artistic talent or prior experience, is portable, and results in a useful product. Sometimes referred to as the “new yoga” — plain and simple — knitting is good for you.

In this program, trained volunteers will provide knitting instruction and a quality materials in an effort to foster wellness, comfort, and community among participants. Beginner and experienced knitters are welcome. Starter kits are available, as is a small selection of yarn and knitting supplies.

Creative expression has often been used in the healing process and it is at the core of Smith Center’s philosophy, but fear of judgment and “not being an artist” can often prevent us from tapping into its healing power. Join us for Outside the Lines, where a facilitator will help you reclaim art-making as a healing tool through guided creative projects. Participants who feel comfortable working on their own projects are also welcome to do so.


Outside the Lines is held Bi-Monthly on Wednesdays from 10:30am – 12:30pm.

Yael Flusberg Gentle Yoga Instructor Smith Center
Yael Flusberg first came to yoga hoping she could get rid of stuff, namely the ways life’s stresses and traumas had become painfully embodied. Fifteen years and thousands of layers of release later, yoga continues to teach her how to make strategic, creative, and life-nourishing choices. Trained as an integrative yoga therapist, Yael’s classes blend active with receptive states of being, and are both insightful and lighthearted. Off the mat, she is a coach, writer and energy therapist. Since 2005, Yael has taught yoga classes at area hospitals, libraries, workplaces, schools, and yoga studios. As an integrative yoga therapist (E-RYT500) she facilitates both group and individual yoga therapy sessions, working with people dealing with a variety of conditions including cancer, digestive disorders, diabetes, eating disorders, fibromyalgia, hypertension, mental health challenges (including depression, anxiety, grief and trauma), rheumatoid arthritis, scoliosis, and sports injuries. This new healing circle is for people who are 45 and older who are living and thriving with Metastatic Breast Cancer. This peer-led circle will provide a safe place to connect, support and share with one another.


What is a Healing Circle?

Healing Circles bring together small numbers of people impacted by a condition or circumstance to share experiences and harvest collective wisdom.  Healing Circles is a peer-led process by which people support each other through deep listening and shared learning. When working at its best, this collaborative conversation model leads to authentic and deep connectivity and can create wisdom and healing for participants.

This Healing Circle will meet Monthly on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30pm.

Lisa Hahn

Lisa Hahn was diagnosed with MBC de novo in the Fall of 2019. In addition to working full-time and attending doctor appointments, she is always looking for a new exercise class and tries to maintain a consistent yoga and pilates practice. Her background in the arts as a former ballet dancer and arts council program officer have given her a strong appreciation for the arts and she is a regular attendee at the Smith Center. She lives in Alexandria with her husband, two teenage boys and two cats and you can follow her on Instagram @dancingwithmbc

About Beth Lawrence

Beth discovered yoga in early 2002 as a mother of six month old twins. She was looking to get back into shape after their birth. In yoga, she found far more than she anticipated- an age old practice designed to help people relieve stress- both mental and physical. After a few years of regular practice, she knew she wanted to share her positive experiences with others. She has been leading yoga classes in the DC area since 2007 after completing her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Nth Degree Yoga with Martha Rosen. In 2011, she went back to earn her RYT500. Her personal practice is inspired by Integral Yoga and Sivananda Yoga, both of which incorporate body and mind into the practice.

This bi-monthly support group provides participants with the opportunity to explore their experience with cancer in a safe group setting with a trained social worker and to connect with others who are facing a similar challenge. About Jennifer Bires, LICSW

Jennifer Bires is a licensed clinical social worker, who works with people affected by cancer. She received her Master’s in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis. Jennifer knows how distressing a cancer diagnosis can be for patients and their families. Her goal as an oncology social worker is to help patients and family members adjust to the emotional impact of a diagnosis.  Jennifer specializes in working with young adults, caregivers and patients who have advanced disease. She strives to help patients and families maintain a high quality of life in the face of their illness.

About Lauren Broschak, MSW, LICSW

Lauren is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in DC and Virginia. She has both her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Social Work, and has been working in oncology for just over three years. She developed her passion for oncology in Michigan where she worked at Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit supporting those touched by cancer. Since moving to the Metro DC Area she has worked at the GW Cancer Center in Washington, DC and is now an Oncology Clinical Therapist at Life with Cancer in Virginia. Lauren is particularly interested in providing support to the young adult community, and has presented at the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW) national conference twice regarding young adults. Most recently, she became the Co-Chair of the Adolescent and Young Adult Special Interest Group at AOSW.

Amid Covid-19 and social distancing, our monthly Walk-n-Talks will look a little different for now.  We are excited to try a new format that will bring the 2Unstoppable community ~ 2Ugether!

Here’s how it works:

  • We will meet up over Zoom for introductions and to say hello!
  • For those who wish to walk-n-talk with a virtual buddy, we’ll exchange cell phone numbers or you can choose to walk solo.
  • Choose a place and set the pace that’s right for you and start walking.
  • After 45 minutes of walking, we will reconnect on Zoom for some social time!

YACS Supper Club

Kick off 2021 by learning to prepare 2 new healthy and delicious dishes alongside other young adult cancer survivors. Chef Kara will lead us in preparing Mediterranean-inspired Chickpea Shakshuka and Flourless Chocolate Brownies, answering any questions along the way. You can make both dishes, just one, or you can simply join us for conversation while supporting the other onscreen cooks. Both dishes are vegan and gluten-free. Please reach out to Chef Kara if you have any questions about substitutions.

Note: Please have all ingredients and supplies out and ready to use before joining the class.


Shakshuka Ingredients*: 
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small onion or shallot
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 28-oz can crushed or diced tomatoes (fire roasted preferred)
  • 1 15-oz can chickpeas
  • Pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
  • Tomato paste (optional)
    Shakshuka
  • Harissa paste (optional)
  • Ground smoked or sweet paprika
  • Ground cumin
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Ground cardamom and coriander (optional)
  • Pitted kalamata or green olives (optional)
  • Eggs (omit for vegan)
  • Can be served with crusty bread, feta cheese, and/or fresh herbs to garnish
**Shakshuka translates to “all mixed up” and can be found in many variations of spiced tomato sauce. Any other vegetables can be added and this is a great way to use up leftover veggies from the week. Feel free to use anything on hand. It’s traditionally made with eggs but there is plenty of protein from the chickpeas for a vegan entree.

Brownies Ingredients: 

Flourless Chocolate Brownies

  • Nut or seed butter [peanut butter, almond butter, sunbutter…]
  • Pumpkin puree [not pie filling – 1 can makes both recipes]
  • 3 tablespoons aquafaba (water from canned chickpeas used in shakshuka recipe)
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Optional spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cayenne pepper, coarse sea salt
Supplies Needed: 
  • Cutting board & knife
  • Large skillet with lid
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Can opener
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula or spoon
  • 8×8 baking pan (can use other size & adjust cooking time)
  • Parchment paper (optional but speeds up cleanup)

The YACS Supper Club provides an opportunity for young adult cancer survivors to come together in a casual setting to share a delicious meal. Chef Kara cooks a healthy 3-course meal to share and leads the group in preparing one menu item together. Past items include chocolate truffles, steamed dumplings. Brazilian crepes, and 5-minute carrot cake. All meals are vegan and gluten-free. **Supper Club is currently only being offered virtually. Recipes and needed supplies are provided ahead of time. We prepare one dish and enjoy our meal together.


About Chef Kara Garret

Kara is a health-supportive chef based in Washington, DC. Following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2013, she embraced the challenge of finding a balance between her foodie lifestyle and eating well with cancer. She has adopted a flexible diet plan that focuses on plant-based, sustainable whole foods, but does not restrict indulgences of things she loves. She is passionate about working with others to encourage healthier food choices that energize the body and the soul.

Kara graduated in August 2017 from the Chef Training Program at Natural Gourmet Institute in NYC and spent one month as the sous chef at The Ananda Ashram Yoga Society of New York in Monroe, NY. She is currently enrolled in the Developing Healthy Communities: Nutrition, Behavior, and Physical Activity graduate program at Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.
