Virtual Walk-N-Talk

Amid Covid-19 and social distancing, our monthly Walk-n-Talks will look a little different for now.  We are excited to try a new format that will bring the 2Unstoppable community ~ 2Ugether!

Here’s how it works:

  • We will meet up over Zoom for introductions and to say hello!
  • For those who wish to walk-n-talk with a virtual buddy, we’ll exchange cell phone numbers or you can choose to walk solo.
  • Choose a place and set the pace that’s right for you and start walking.
  • After 45 minutes of walking, we will reconnect on Zoom for some social time!

Sustainable Journaling

The Sustainable Journaling Workshop helps participants create a journaling practice that can be maintained for an indefinite period of time. By concentrating more on the practice of journaling than on the content and intention behind it, the strategies shared allow participants to approach journaling less as a means to an end and more as an end in itself. This can help to create a sustainable and fulfilling practice which stands on its own but which can also be applied to other journaling strategies.

Topics discussed will include:

  • Easy strategies for starting and maintaining a journal
  • The advantages of creating a daily habit of journaling and the benefits of both the practice and the product
  • Strategies for overcoming obstacles to creating a daily practice
  • Privacy concerns
  • How to start your journal at any point in the past
  • How to continue with the practice if days are missed
  • Creating a practice that is structured yet adaptable to one’s lifestyle and preferred approach to journaling

Each meeting incorporates presentations as well as opportunities for group and chat room sharing that caters to different engagement styles. Although homework is assigned, it easily accommodates participants with busy schedules.


Sustainable Journaling will be offered as a four-part workshop on the following dates: 

  • Saturday, January 9th, 10 – 11 AM
  • Saturday, January 16th, 10 – 11 AM
  • Saturday, January 23rd, 10 – 11 AM
  • Saturday, January 30th, 10 – 11 AM

Participants are encouraged to attend all four workshop sessions to get the most out of the Sustainable Journaling process. By registering above, you will be registered for all four sessions. Please let us know in advance if you will not be able to attend all four sessions.

John Casey

John Casey works as a barber in Brooklyn, NY. This trade affords him the opportunity to meet and talk with many different people on a daily basis. Learning that many of his customers shared his interest in keeping a journal but didn’t know how to start or to maintain one, he decided to create a workshop that would allow him to share what he’d learned about this rewarding practice.
In his free time, John loves being in his car and is grateful for any opportunity he gets to drive through to the Hudson Valley where he grew up. He has a BFA in Painting and enjoys drawing, painting and visiting art museums. His favorite conversation topics are music, film and anything pertaining to behavioral psychology.

YACS Supper Club

Kick off 2021 by learning to prepare 2 new healthy and delicious dishes alongside other young adult cancer survivors. Chef Kara will lead us in preparing Mediterranean-inspired Chickpea Shakshuka and Flourless Chocolate Brownies, answering any questions along the way. You can make both dishes, just one, or you can simply join us for conversation while supporting the other onscreen cooks. Both dishes are vegan and gluten-free. Please reach out to Chef Kara if you have any questions about substitutions.

Note: Please have all ingredients and supplies out and ready to use before joining the class.


Shakshuka Ingredients*: 
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small onion or shallot
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 28-oz can crushed or diced tomatoes (fire roasted preferred)
  • 1 15-oz can chickpeas
  • Pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
  • Tomato paste (optional)
    Shakshuka
  • Harissa paste (optional)
  • Ground smoked or sweet paprika
  • Ground cumin
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Ground cardamom and coriander (optional)
  • Pitted kalamata or green olives (optional)
  • Eggs (omit for vegan)
  • Can be served with crusty bread, feta cheese, and/or fresh herbs to garnish
**Shakshuka translates to “all mixed up” and can be found in many variations of spiced tomato sauce. Any other vegetables can be added and this is a great way to use up leftover veggies from the week. Feel free to use anything on hand. It’s traditionally made with eggs but there is plenty of protein from the chickpeas for a vegan entree.

Brownies Ingredients: 

Flourless Chocolate Brownies

  • Nut or seed butter [peanut butter, almond butter, sunbutter…]
  • Pumpkin puree [not pie filling – 1 can makes both recipes]
  • 3 tablespoons aquafaba (water from canned chickpeas used in shakshuka recipe)
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Optional spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cayenne pepper, coarse sea salt
Supplies Needed: 
  • Cutting board & knife
  • Large skillet with lid
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Can opener
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula or spoon
  • 8×8 baking pan (can use other size & adjust cooking time)
  • Parchment paper (optional but speeds up cleanup)

The YACS Supper Club provides an opportunity for young adult cancer survivors to come together in a casual setting to share a delicious meal. Chef Kara cooks a healthy 3-course meal to share and leads the group in preparing one menu item together. Past items include chocolate truffles, steamed dumplings. Brazilian crepes, and 5-minute carrot cake. All meals are vegan and gluten-free. **Supper Club is currently only being offered virtually. Recipes and needed supplies are provided ahead of time. We prepare one dish and enjoy our meal together.


About Chef Kara Garret

Kara is a health-supportive chef based in Washington, DC. Following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2013, she embraced the challenge of finding a balance between her foodie lifestyle and eating well with cancer. She has adopted a flexible diet plan that focuses on plant-based, sustainable whole foods, but does not restrict indulgences of things she loves. She is passionate about working with others to encourage healthier food choices that energize the body and the soul.

Kara graduated in August 2017 from the Chef Training Program at Natural Gourmet Institute in NYC and spent one month as the sous chef at The Ananda Ashram Yoga Society of New York in Monroe, NY. She is currently enrolled in the Developing Healthy Communities: Nutrition, Behavior, and Physical Activity graduate program at Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

with Project Knitwell and Friends

Join us weekly to enjoy knitting in a safe and welcoming environment. Knitting can provide a respite from one’s immediate situation, serve as a way to productively pass the time, and have a positive effect on reducing stress symptoms. It is relatively easy to learn, requires no artistic talent or prior experience, is portable, and results in a useful product. Sometimes referred to as the “new yoga” — plain and simple — knitting is good for you.

In this program, trained volunteers will provide knitting instruction and a quality materials in an effort to foster wellness, comfort, and community among participants. Beginner and experienced knitters are welcome. Starter kits are available, as is a small selection of yarn and knitting supplies.

Enjoy a greater sense of well-being and enhanced energy in our gentle yoga classes. Learn various yoga postures, techniques in progressive relaxation, breathing practices, and meditation to help reduce stress, as well as balance mind, body, and spirit.

Our classes are specifically designed for adults facing stress, cancer, or other illness and are open to anyone interested in attending. All levels are welcome.

Yael Flusberg Gentle Yoga Instructor Smith Center
Yael Flusberg first came to yoga hoping she could get rid of stuff, namely the ways life’s stresses and traumas had become painfully embodied. Fifteen years and thousands of layers of release later, yoga continues to teach her how to make strategic, creative, and life-nourishing choices. Trained as an integrative yoga therapist, Yael’s classes blend active with receptive states of being, and are both insightful and lighthearted. Off the mat, she is a coach, writer and energy therapist. Since 2005, Yael has taught yoga classes at area hospitals, libraries, workplaces, schools, and yoga studios. As an integrative yoga therapist (E-RYT500) she facilitates both group and individual yoga therapy sessions, working with people dealing with a variety of conditions including cancer, digestive disorders, diabetes, eating disorders, fibromyalgia, hypertension, mental health challenges (including depression, anxiety, grief and trauma), rheumatoid arthritis, scoliosis, and sports injuries. About Beth Lawrence

Beth discovered yoga in early 2002 as a mother of six month old twins. She was looking to get back into shape after their birth. In yoga, she found far more than she anticipated- an age old practice designed to help people relieve stress- both mental and physical. After a few years of regular practice, she knew she wanted to share her positive experiences with others. She has been leading yoga classes in the DC area since 2007 after completing her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Nth Degree Yoga with Martha Rosen. In 2011, she went back to earn her RYT500. Her personal practice is inspired by Integral Yoga and Sivananda Yoga, both of which incorporate body and mind into the practice.

Coping Through Comedy’s comedy writing workshop is offered to cancer patients/survivors. The intention of the workshop is to provide a safe and creative environment for those touched by cancer to be able to express themselves and find the humor surrounding the difficulties in life and cancer. No previous comedy writing experience is necessary.


Coping Through Comedy: Comedy Writing Workshop is held Bi-Monthly on Wednesdays.

Participants can attend on a drop-in basis, but prior registration is required.

About Charity Sade

Charity Sad​e​ is an up and coming comedian from Indiana, but has resided in Washington, D.C. for the last 8 years.

She has performed across the country, and won a new comic competition at Greenwich Village Comedy Club. ​Within her first year of comedy, Charity made her festival debut at the 2018 DC Comedy Festival as well as the Chicago Women’s Funny Festival.

She has always used humor to get through difficult moments in her life, including her breast cancer diagnosis at age 27. ​On stage, she takes her difficult life experiences and turns them into relatable, humorous tales. Her comedic superpower is her ability to make you simultaneously laugh and cringe.

Charity is the creator and founder of Comedic Relief: Coping Through Comedy. You can catch Charity hosting, producing, and performing on shows across the DMV.

Cathrine is a 200 hour Hatha Yoga teacher. Further training in Yoga for trauma has led her to offer Yoga and Yoga Nidra to patients with PTSD and cancer in a hospital setting. Daily she sees how the power of Yoga Nidra brings peace and tranquility to herself and to others.
