Location:  Theodore Roosevelt Island

Join other young adult cancer survivors for a morning of hiking on Theodore Roosevelt Island, in the Potomac River. The island is a memorial and wilderness preserve with plenty of flora and fauna and views of Georgetown and Arlington. The hike is suitable for all levels and will end with a bring your own picnic lunch – so pack something delicious (we’ll have a cooler to store it). Plan to wear comfortable walking shoes, athletic pants, and non-cotton layers. Bring plenty of water and a hat and sunglasses for added sun protection.

The event will run until approximately 12:00pm (we plan to finish the hike around 11am and enjoy a picnic lunch for an hour). For those who want to hang out a little longer, we will share more fun times at a coffee shop or restaurant nearby.

This program is co-hosted by the First Descents DC/Baltimore Tributary. First Descents (FD) is a recognized leader in outdoor experiential programming. Through outdoor adventures, skills development, and local adventure communities FD improves the long-term survivorship of young adults impacted by cancer. The DC/Baltimore Trib provides continuous support and the opportunity for connection and year-round adventure experiences at the local level. This scenic hike features a waterfall, a few small stream crossings, and views of Patapsco River. The hike is suitable for all levels and will end with a bring your own picnic lunch – so pack something delicious (we’ll have a cooler to store it). Plan to wear comfortable walking shoes, athletic pants, and non-cotton layers. Bring plenty of water and a hat and sunglasses for added sun protection. Join us for an afternoon of Motivation, Conversation, and Empowerment!  Meet Bryant Johnson – Supreme Court justice and octogenarian Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s personal trainer and author of The RBG Workout, How She Stays Strong and You Can, Too. 

As seen on Stephen Colbert and in the recent documentary, The RBG Movie, and featured in the book, The Notorious RBG, Bryant Johnson has been training Justice Ginsburg since 1999 when she completed treatment for colorectal cancer.  They’ve been working out together ever since!  Books and special-edition Super Diva! t-shirts will be available for purchase. With the Young Adult Cancer Community

Join the DC Young Adult Cancer Community for a fun evening of Chips, Guacamole, Salsa Dancing and Music hosted by young adult participant Yvonne Kirabo.  Catherine Butterworth, a DC renowned instructor is a professional dance instructor who has been teaching for over 10 years. She is also a member of the National Dance Council of America and a competitor in the latin dances. Catherine will provide instruction for those who want to learn or improve their salsa skills.  Dress is casual; wear comfortable shoes.
