Our programs are also open to the community, and tailored to meet the needs of people affected by cancer. Classes and workshops are free or low cost on a pay-as-you-can basis, ensuring that our programs are accessible to everyone.


About Johnnette Armstrong

Certified Personal Trainer, Herbalist, Pink Pilates instructor, Health Coach and a Groove Method Provider. I call myself a Wellness Advocate. I have worked in the fitness field for over 15 years and I currently offer classes at Hope Connections in MD, work with seniors, and offer one-on-one personal training.

After my own struggle with body image and self-esteem, I went on a journey to find out the healthy way to lose weight and feel better about myself. I discovered that there is no right way to wellness. We are all beautiful and unique individuals and over the years I have learned three important things for teaching and working with people:

  1. How to create a space where people feel good about themselves.
  2. The importance of accurate knowledge to take care of our bodies.
  3. And how to consistently move our bodies so that we feel good. 

After 15 years of working in this industry, I have found that there is more than one way to move our bodies. The most important thing is to find one that you enjoy. I am super excited to bring Groove Method to you. It’s a fun and simple way to move our bodies. The cool thing is, anyone can do it! 

My passion is helping people to create a wellness toolbox that works for the whole person. Thank you in advance for allowing me to share my passion with you!

Virtual Walk-N-Talk

Join us for a fun way to get moving in our introductory Belly Dancing class!

Farah Abi is an Egyptian style bellydancer. She has been dancing for 20 years and teaching for the last 10. Her style is both retro and theatrical. An actress before becoming a dancer, Farah teaches and coaches dancers to incorporate acting techniques in their dancing. She also teaches Zumba Fitness classes online.
This beginner class will take students through a warm-up and go over basic moves and isolations then we’ll dance it out for the rest of the class!

This program will focus on the ideology of Indigenous medicine from a Native American perspective. You will have a chance to experience the healing power of the Jingle Dress Dance, which is a traditional healing dance that originated from the Ojibwa/Anishinabe tribe. Through storytelling, traditional dance, singing, and drumming, experience the realignment of mind, body, and spirit.

Traditional Native American remedies have been either diluted by mainstream culture or completely rejected or ignored in the conventional medical system. The vast majority of the medicines used today are a direct product of some Indigneous concept. This talk will explore the origins of traditional Indigenous medicines, and how to use them properly and respectfully in your daily lives.

The Jingle dress dance was developed by the medicine people of the Ojibwa tribe to heal the sick granddaughter of the Chief. The dresses are not costumes, they are traditional regalia that are one of a kind and have a unique connection and meaning to the wearers. The sound of the tin jingles that cascade down the dress make the sound of rain coming down on a tin roof. The jingle dress dance is one of the most common powwow dances and is revered in the Indigenous community.

About Aminah Sané Ghaffar

Aminah Sané Ghaffar is a Lumbee and African American woman from Pembroke, NC. She is a B.S. in Biology from East Carolina University where she also ran track and field and holds the school record for the heptathlon. She earned a Masters from Georgetown University in Physiology and Biophysics with a concentration in Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and a recipient of the Hoyas for Science Scholarship. She is an Indigenous rights activist and has spoken at the Women’s March in Annapolis, MD in honor of Missing and Murdered Indigneous Women. She is a two-time panelist at the Shifting the Paradigm Back to Humanity Conference, and has aspirations to attend medical school to serve underserved populations on Native American reservations.

Movement, expression, imagery and creativity can facilitate wellness. This class will practice techniques to help deal with tension, enhance relaxation, and cope with medical procedures and physical limitations. All levels welcome.

About Lady Nwadike 

Lady Nwadike received her Master’s in Biophysics and Physiology with a concentration in Complementary and Integrative Medicine from Georgetown University. During her coursework, she was familiarized with ancient easter medical practices and strives to integrate evidence based methods into a more traditional western approach, encouraging mind-body wellness. She has also been involved in numerous social justice campaigns and showcases her work on various social media outlets. Her work in research, advocacy and health has always kept minority issues and interests at the forefront. She is also the Editor and Chief for MaryJane of Maryland, a premier medical cannabis magazine for the state of MD. She also presents within the DC and MD community on safe and effective uses of cannabis for wellness. She is interested in exploring the mosaic we create for ourselves throughout our lives where parts of herself and others intersect, as I believe that it is at these points where individuals are their most raw vulnerable. Those two things breed passion and understanding, which in turn can lead to change of how we take care of ourselves and others.
